Re. the Hull fan at the end of that clip, shouting "It wasn't a corner. It wasn't a corner", there is a video on the Hull board showing the moment when Stacey puts in the cross which led to that final corner, and then to the goal. The camera angle is close to, but not actually quite in line, with the goal line, and the ball has every appearance of being just out of play. Equally, seen in line, it may just have remained in play. No sign of the linesman. A lot is made of how big a league the Championship is but, to live up to its billing, it now needs VAR. That clip gives a fine view of the goal, highlighting Idah's speed of reaction and great technique in getting close enough, quickly enough, to poke the ball past the on-rushing keeper with his fully extended leg.
Yes, both were executed with aplomb, the knee slide finishing right at the corner flag! Good MFW match report: https://norwichcity.myfootballwriter.com/2023/08/06/match-report-city-2-hull-1/ I liked the concluding bit: "It was like everything that was missing from the last two seasons had been distilled into a single match. Commitment and effort from the players. Resilience. Fighting to the last. Terrific support from the crowd. And even the player line up and olés to the crowd."
Usually when we go a goal down the players wilt & give up , Duffy & Barnes will not allow their team mates to quit & you could see a real fight in the entire team to bust a gut getting the ball back or make up an extra yard to keep a pass in . It was lovely to see & clearly the fans reacted by cheering them on right until the end
At one point, Duffy brought the ball forward, gave it to a team mate on the right touchline, and continued running; he was then on the end of the resulting long cross into the box, and nearly scored. WhoScored put him level with Argos and Sargent for total shots, all on 4, followed by Barnes and Sara on 3.
Haven't yet seen a re-run of the full match, but from the bits I have seen, I'd give MOM to Sara. It was a good performance all round, and fantastic from young Rowe, but GS orchestrated the entire proceedings before being withdrawn late on.
Equally though, the Premier League "what will VAR check" explicitly rules out checking whether a corner should be awarded. In the event of a goal from a corner it only checks the immediate attacking phase, i.e. from the in time the corner is taken. Of course VAR could be used more heavily, with different rules around it's usage, but you'd have to expand the remit to every stoppage in play before you catch that one. https://www.premierleague.com/news/1293321 The Hull assistant manager bleating on about the corner decision, and the amount of added time, was particularly poor I thought. Everyone knows added time is "a minimum of..." and their goalkeeper got booked for timewasting in added time. Teams get incorrectly awarded throw-ins/corners all the time, and Hull had two opportunities to make a good clearance of it before Idah scored. I know he's emotional and playing to his own fanbase who are obviously feeling aggrieved, but I would support the FA fining him for that.
Great fighting performance. 28 shots with only 5 on target. Still think we need a clinical striker: now where is my magic wand………?
Good result to kick off the season, first opening home win in 20 years (Grimsby 2002?),good to see we've become more of a threat from set pieces at long last. Next week is going to be a bigger test against So'ton
Yes I believe Southampton broke the Championship record for the most passes within a half of football in their last game
Over the entire game, 987 total passes with a 94% success rate; first half only, 508 passes, same PS rate (all according to WhoScored). They are well on course to challenge Man City for the honour of having the slowest attack rate in England. If I remember rightly, under Farke, in the EPL, we were runners up (or maybe that should be "walkers up"..........).
@resurgram is it just me that this thread is pinned for? Confusing when this thread is higher than todays game
Sorry Suffolk. Didn't realise it was pinned. Will try and unpin all future matchday threads AFTER the game has been won (or should that be played?
