I have some bad news for the publishers who had their next volumes of Pride of the Lionesses and Roar of the Lionesses ready to go this coming week
yeah I agree. It was the same against Nigeria and Colombia too, if we’re really honest. But losing 2 of the best players in not only the team, but women’s football in general, made winning the World Cup a monumental task. If Williamson and Mead had been fit, we’d have looked like a totally different side. massive shoutout to Alex Greenwood, too. Our player of the tournament by miles. Outstanding from start to finish.
Today's game was like watching last seasons Spurs without the Kane factor , midfield over run and not able to comfortably keep the ball ,most forward play was hurried Any newbies to watching England, welcome to a lifetime of what ifs
the decision to take off Russo puzzled me, tbh. If we’d replaced her with Beth England, fair enough, but we didn’t…. Until much later in the game. So for about 40 mins we just invited more pressure as we had no outlet up front. As soon as England was brought on, things changed… briefly. Then all of a sudden Chloe Kelly stopped putting crosses in when we had an actual striker. It also made Millie Bright being shoved up front totally pointless.
Much like Southgate in 2018, the draw did the Lionesses a lot more favours than any pundit is going to admit Most obviously, who were the pre-tournament favourites? USA, Sweden, Germany, and maybe Japan - and three of those teams were in the opposite side of the draw, with Germany the only team in England's side of the draw - and they became a non-factor when they choked against South Korea. But once England came up against a team of sufficient quality in Spain, instead of teams punching above their weight like Nigeria or Colombia, what happened? Same as what happened in 2018 when Southgate's team faced Belgium or Croatia Still, on the plus side, that means I won't be hearing Sweet ****ing Caroline all evening...
I don’t know why USA and Sweden were amongst the favourites, tbh. USA are going through a rebuild. I was at the game last autumn at wembley, and they were **** tbh. and Sweden aren’t anything special, at all. Japan are decent, as are Germany… as long as Popp finds the back of the net. But if she has a poor game, they aren’t too much of a threat. I think your criticism of England is a bit harsh mate. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve only been following the lionesses over the last 2 years or so, but based on very recent history, there’s only 1 team that are potentially better than us, and that’s Spain. As I said, we were lucky to beat them in the euro’s last year. We didn’t play anyone any where near as good, and they would have felt hard done by losing 2-1 to us. But that’s football. We struggled against the likes of Nigeria and Colombia because they parked the bus and tried to negate us, and it worked. And we were lucky to go through, as we struggled to find solutions to their tactics. But at the same time, we were by no means at full strength. Beth Mead in particular was a massive attacking loss. Neither of those games would have looked so difficult or been as nail biting if she was on the pitch. IMO, will injuries considered, we did very well making the World Cup final. But beating Spain with injuries to major players was always gonna be tough, and Spain were out for revenge. They thoroughly deserved the title today.
Except Spain lost a few players too - through revolt rather than injury. Their coach seems not universally liked by the team as well.
Yeah, I think they only started with about 4 of the players from last year. So huge credit to their players, it shows how good they are.
Gigi Buffon says there's two Italian keepers he will be watching this season: Marco Carnesecchi, who is expected to make Atalanta's No1 jersey his own this season, and our very own Guglielmo Vicario Ah, but somebody on Twitter said Vicario is ****...
Cristiano Ronaldo has lost his number one slot in “The Sexiest Footballers” list (male presumably) to Marco Acensio. Mason Mount 4th. Son 8th. Who makes these lists?
