Johnson promised to create 10 'freeports' around the country.

He promised to build 40 new hospitals.

Sunak has promised to stop the boats.

There must be grown ups who actually believe all this shyte.

Why isn’t ‘end the impact of child poverty’ in any of the 5 priorities ?

    They were promises mate ...

... so many you'd think at least one would work out by the law of averages.

There was a conversation about U turns the other day. You’d get less u turns if you had less false promises.

They probably thought they could make the hill level. If they have said it s for road improvement, don’t hold our breath , end of 2014 gave go ahead for dualling of Morpeth to Ellingham A1 , to be complete in 6 years. Still I believe picking fault with the plans.

Repairing roads and building a bypass isn't levelling up ...

... that's why we pay income tax and RFL ffs.

Johnson made it sound like they were all paying out of their trust funds and nom-dom nest eggs <laugh>

Made me chuckle that, probably shouldnt have. 30 years since I lived in gods county of Durham. That Toft Hill road needed a rethink even back then.

It may seem I defending tories but that is not my intention here. I do think the principle of levelling up is sound and much needed. It has all kinds of social and economic upsides, if done correctly. So far the execution has been far too slow. I would have argued covid was a perfect time to get some projects done and dusted, but we didnt. I would say road improvements are sensible projects where they solve traffic bottlenecks that prevent business investment. My guess, and I may be wrong, is when some business look to invest transport links are a significant consideration. So if we are solving some of those barriers it makes sense to me. The issue I forsee is granting the money from central government to local authorities is one thing. Then we get into the planning rigmarole like you say, and before we know it 3 or 4 years have passed and £20m is no longer worth what it was. Need more joined up thinking in central government, but sadly I think we are whistling into the wind hoping for that anytime soon.

A very small and minor win for levelling up that made me cheer inside. High House Chapel in Ireshopeburn has been saved by the fund. Quite an important historical place that, and the little museum next door is well worth saving. Likely only a minor economic boost to the local area, but an important cultural one I think. More of these projects would be worth supporting in my opinion, to save our sense of history in the world.

Is this the very same Boris who used to stand on pub tables shouting "**** The Plebs" during his Bullingdon Club days? :emoticon-0102-bigsm

It's typical of the cowardice you see from the likes of Johnson, Clarkson, etc.

They 'attack' people who can't or won't respond, anyone from the poorly paid to elderly caravan owners ...

... they wouldn't dare be honest and attack the IRA or the BLM.

Absolutely , they can’t expect credit twice for the same project. As far as A1 goes I’m convinced they are deliberately delaying- decision time has been postponed several times - latest one next month - even if passed then there’s a 6 month “ cooling off “ period so next March they could still stop it. All these questions and consultations still ongoing 8 years later is bad enough , but on top of the fact that several govts prior to 2014 had also “agreed “ to this makes it look like there is no intention to complete it

Swinging cuts to the poorest boroughs then levelling up funding. It’s openly ridiculous but lapped up by those who believe the sound bites. I think this last government have been the worst because of their deceipt. Thatcher at least had the balls to be openly horrible.

Apparently he’s just realised this issue is complicated. Sharpest tool in the box. Maybe he should have considered the issue before his PR team put his make up on.
