Yep! The world needs more asymmetrical stadiums with odd looking stands! Wish I'd gone to the Dell now after seeing pics of it.

Here's another close-up of the chocolate boxes. Such a unique stand, you can only love it!

Just for the record. Here is another picture of the same end. This time with the new stand which replaced the old in the early 80s. It was steep and imposing but looked rather odd without the boxes. It would be far too dangerous in comparison to today's standards that's for sure!

Indeed. My dad was a docker, and would of been there with his mates. He'd love this shot. Anyone know if this available in print?

I seem to remember that there were often bigger crowds at midweek games because the docks didn't work after dark, whereas the dockers were often working on Saturdays. Am I right or have I got that wrong?

Isn't that Steve Claridge being drawn in by the red and white stripes? Perhaps that could explain his new found love of all things Saints!

Indeed, that is Matty playing in Steve Claridge's testimonial at Fratton Park. Matty said he'd never wear the Portsmouth shirt, but he made an exception for Steve Claridge. In order for that to happen though, he wore his Saints shirt underneath, so that the Pompey shirt didn't actually touch him. The photo shows Matty having scored [of course] and Steve congratulating him. Stranger things have happened - both Mick Channon and Ron Davies played professional football for Pompey, in their later careers. <doh>
