Just wondering what people's thoughts are surrounding the mentality of the squad. It seems to me that Newcastle are too pleased to simply reach a final and too pleased to finish 4th. How can Newcastle break the inferiority complex?... or is it really just ££££? Your thoughts?
I think that's a knee jerk reaction to the Man City result. The clips from training make the team look focused and Eddie clearly wants to win every game. I don't see the team resting on their laurels myself. Then again I'm down south so don't get to see them in person overmuch
Not just Yesterday hence the cup final mention. It's something I think Newcastle have developed which is this idea of 'Cup runs' being success. Newcastle are trying to become a club that wins and I think one of the biggest challenges will be changing the mentality. Newcastle naturally have a small club mentality.... nobody really believes yet.
Don’t think it’s mentality per se as opposed to quality. Get better players and we will win a trophy or two.
We need another 300 million ... 3 or 4 top players and a belief rather than a hope from the manager and players. It's not bad losing Yesterday, but it was clearly OK for them to not win... the cup final was the same.... it just feels like they don't believe.
It's just a matter of time and experience. You can't go from relegation fodder to PL/CL champion mindset overnight (or within 2 years). Confidence and that real winning mentality will build over time, as will success, hopefully. It's all part of the journey from being fairly crap to being genuine contenders and hopefully champions at some point. We are in a good place.
Right now, 2nd place would be great. But I know what you mean. That said, to think like no.1 you have to truly believe you ARE no.1. Really believe, with no doubts at the back of the mind. Some people are naturally born with that, but most need it to be coached into them. It takes time and confidence & belief build with each success.
This is the exact mentality issue that needs to be removed from this city and this club. Until Newcastle believes and stops celebrating mediocrity it will always fail.
Yesterday was pathetic. The management of that game was dreadful. We have a handful of top class players and two of them ended up watching from the sidelines.
I also think Newcastle fans have become afraid to believe or demand 1st because of fear of ridicule. The most important thing is to 'believe'. You'll get nowhere thinking 2nd place is OK.... those players do not believe they're good enough imo and are happy to come 4th. I love this team, but you can see they were not confident at all Yesterday or st Wembley.
I agree. And fail to understand why in 20 months in charge that the Newbies haven't bought Mbappe, Neymar, Messi and Ronaldo when they were all available as well as all the players we have already bought.
They didn't need them they just uncharacteristically fluffed their lines when the opportunities came. If Newcastle believed in themselves I think they could have got something last night... 1st half they were walking around in admiration. I bet they walked out thinking I wish I played here!
I'm not 'afraid' to believe, I just don't believe we are no. 1 'YET'. We are building towards it, but to think right now we have the no. 1 squad would be deluded.
