"for physical pain Gout in your big toe takes a bit of beating - especially if you accidentally knock it!"

I can vouch for that, also, when the anaesthetic wears off after having your big toe nails removed. I was told by the nurse that I might need a couple of codeine later, with a strange look of concern on her face!

As it turned out the doctor was wrong and I had gout in my knee so after an operation to shovel out the uric acid crystals and some allopurinol I have been okay. The pictures of people with gout in their big toe make me very uncomfortable… it can be horrific.
There used to be a guy who did a sketch about a gout sufferer with a bandaged foot and people bumped into him …. it might have been Fred Emmny … in the early 60’s. Strange what we laughed at then

A pal of mine had it in his big toe and he accidentally kicked the bed post one night. He said the pain was so bad it made him vomit. And he's a bit of a hard case this bloke!

Speaking of pain. Just after we got married my wife contracted meningitis. As part of the tests to understand whether it was viral or bacterial they had to conduct a spinal tap. The hospital allowed a student to do the tap and the blood-curdling screams from my wife will stay with me for life. After 2 or 3 attempts I stepped in and made them stop. The next day an anaesthetist did the tap and my missus didn't even realise it had been done. Really hard to watch that........

Been through plenty of emotional/mental pain and trauma in my life , but not so much physical - probs worst one was last winter , up in the loft trying to fit a light frame to the rafters in the loft so I could fix extra insulation sheets. Anyway, grabbed a handsaw to cut a notch in one of the plinths to fit round a socket and of course the saw slipped and went straight into the index finger where it joins the hand. I gave it a quick look and thought oh ****, that’s deep. Called down to the wife to get ready to take me to A&E.

Now for the pain part. Finally got to see the nurse who asked me when I last had a tetanus. I couldn’t remember so she said she’d need to rinse out the cut with anaesthetic to avoid infection. She also told me to sit straighter on the bed coz if I passed out and fell off she wouldn’t be able to lift me back up. Anyway, She rinsed the cut (bone deep) with iodine and I almost hit the roof. I screamed and cursed so loudly another nurse came into the room and said”are you okay”. I said “no, not really”. She said “I’m not talking to you, I’m talking to the nurse”… that made me laugh, I apologised for my language like a schoolboy and gradually got my breath back. 2 weeks later the cut got infected and early signs of sepsis, but v heavy ABs got shot of that , thankfully.

I have a canny scar, but no impairment esp important for a keen golfer!
