Just seen the highlights…nice to be 2nd in a programme that starts at 9 (aka Jim-jam time). Also nice to score last goal…wouldn’t be the same to be Norwich and drop 2 points in injury time. Won’t always go our way, but loving no VAR
Just seen the second penalty on EFL programme. Not a penalty for me, KWP just barged into the Norwich player and collapsed. I would be fuming if it was given the other way. Makes no difference now, but when it goes against us in another game, remember we have our own dubious goals.
Phew!, that felt like a McMenemy Saints game from 40 years ago when we would let in some but hopefully score more. Anyone not happy with that today may as well give up on life, to me football is an entertainment and it's not all about winning. We will score bucket loads playing like that and you would like to think that the defending will improve during the season. It's also a young team too so there should be improvement in time as well as getting used to RM's style of play. I expected mixed results early on so 4 out of 6 is satisfactory at this point, I might need to get to the docs to check out my heart as i'm not sure that it can last the pace of this season!
Pretty sure it was for the very long shirt pull that preceded that. Who knows. No VAR so much better.
I can't go to games anymore for more than one reason so I do feel very happy for the fans who have come back buoyed up by just the type of game it was, regardless of the result - you loyal lot really have had to put up with some shocking garbage over the last few seasons so I don't blame anyone for really enjoying it today. I saw someone on Saints Web complaining about the penalties saying they were awful, not the awards, but the technique by Armstong. As for the last penalty maybe it looked soft on KWP but the shirt pull on Adams was blatant and shirt pulling in the box has always been a penalty - just most referees in the professional game chicken out when they see it.
I’ve always thought a penalty for shirt pulling is a bit harsh. I think my mannequin idea is much better.
Mental match. Most of my thoughts on the game have already been said. Think RM got it wrong not starting Charles against a physical Norwich team, our midfield was too attack minded and lightweight and that seemed likely from seeing the lineup before KO. Charles should have come on sooner too when they were just carving through us with ease whenever they did have the ball. So yeah the defence was awful and shambolic, but they also had no protection. Alcaraz had a lot of poor touches and passes today and I felt like he was trying to do too much that wasn’t his game first half in particular. When Norwich started to slow and he had more room he came alive and had a brilliant 20 min spell where everything was through him. Hope Smallbones injury isn’t bad, good job Downes arrival is imminent! Loved having no VAR and being able to enjoy goals without second guessing every little thing that might mean it’s taken away from us. And finally, how the **** did we get 7 yellow cards? We’re going to have a hell of a lot of suspensions this season if this continues. Ridiculous. You’d think we were a dirty team. Oh one last thing. I’m not a fan of singing EIEIEIO this early in the season.
I agree about edozie, great runs but the final pass is so poor. The potential is there but a long way off. He also leaves us very vulnerable on the left as his tackling is terrible. He is not strong enough to push people off the ball and instead bounces off them when attempting a tackle. The first goal conceded he didn't even attempt to stop the cross and simply turned his back so he didn't get hit allowing the crosser plenty of time to find his man. Cannot blame him alone for the third but he Armstrong and alcaraz were marking noone at the corner and simply looked at each other when they scored from a header unmarked. I think he will come as the season goes on but at the moment I would much prefer either Armstrong on the left. Think he would be better if he had a target man to ping a cross in instead of finding a through ball against teams we have seen twice sit back.... if only we had a tall striker.
Yeah. It didn't think it was a penalty watching it live, and the highlights didn't change my opinion. We got lucky there - but a draw was a fair result.
Norwich's fourth goal was partly as a result of Tella's stupid yellow card earlier (for dissent I think). It prevented him from taking out a Norwich player earlier in the move, when it ordinarily would have been a simple pull back to stop the attack at source. (Obviously Manning's error didn't exactly help!) To be honest, I like the new initiatives concerning yellow cards. But players will need to quickly wise-up/learn, so that they're not wasting their opportunity of picking up a necessary yellow by instead picking up a totally unnecessary one first.
I think Tella's yellow was for kicking or tripping an opponent after an advantage. Referee was making that sort of motion with his feet anyway.
No it was for going mental at the ref when he felt the ball went out of play twice in about 30 seconds and wasn’t called (the ball didn’t go out)
