In spite of the undoubted popularity of this Ascot meeting <whistle>, will still have a go at one of the races. Boooo, I know!

    Golden Move
has an excellent chance of a good run in the 1m4f Class-3 Handicap at Ascot on forecast soft/good-to-soft ground. Well-liked by the stable, the Golden Horn colt should go really well. Top French jockey, Olivier Peslier, rides for the Richard Fahey yard.

5/1 (Coral/BetVictor) best price at time of writing. Any drift then e/w should be considered.

    plus Rev.Forecast with Rajasthan.

My horse' or a hair of it's tail anyway, is running in the 2:45, with Saffie in the saddle (that should put the value of the horse up ;) )
So Scampi it is for me.

Newmarket 15.40 Wild Goddess for me at 4/1 C&D winner in decent time, winning easily, after promising debut run. Les Bleus looks way overpriced at 25/1. C&D winner in very respectable time, considering she lost a few lengths at the start

Everybody’s favourite day of the flat season, the annual joke that is Shergar Cup day. No sign of the old boy showing up to celebrate – unless he is in some of the meat pies...

With the gloomy weather forecast in the Manchester area (when is it not?), I would not bet on the going remaining Good at Haydock by the time the action starts. The William Haggas six year old Al Aasy looks like a license to print money in the Rose of Lancaster if he can give WFA and a sex allowance to Richard Fahey’s three year old Midnight Mile; however, will Phantom Flight play ball and set the race up for him or is this going to become tactical?

The rain should not get to HQ early enough (if at all) to affect the Good ground there and I expect most eyes will be on the opener for future clues as some very well bred fillies make their debuts, including Beautiful Love, Monterosa, Raheena, See The Fire and Silver Feather. The bookies make The King’s horse favourite for the Nursery off bottom weight and none of the single-figure field handicaps make much appeal on a card where William Buick has very good chances in most of the races.

The feature Sweet Solera at 3:40 is a mix of proven form and unexposed potential. Charlie Appleby said at the start of the season that he felt he had some good juveniles this term and Wild Goddess lost her maiden tag at the second attempt over course and distance last time, winning very easily and reversing debut running with Summit. Of those with potential, she looks the most likely and it will be interesting to see if fellow course and distance winner Queen’s Reign sets off to make all again. Also a course and distance winner is Charlie Johnston’s Carolina Reaper, who was not too hot on her debut at Beverley (I was there that day) but was a close-up sixth in the Chesham trying to make all and lost her maiden tag making all. That suggests there may be competition for the lead today. Jabaara was clearly well regarded when she won on debut on the Rowley course but she never featured in the Albany on the wrong side of the track and re-opposes the third that day Soprano. That Ascot form does not look reliable and Soprano subsequently ran third in a Listed race at Sandown, a length behind FALLEN ANGEL on soft ground. Prior to that FALLEN ANGEL had won on debut in a race where Queen’s Reign was third. So the collective form lines point to Karl Burke’s filly, with the obvious danger the Godolphin filly.

In Richard Fahey’s Sporting Life column on Friday he nominated that one as his best chance of the weekend. Fair play to the guy as he does not use his column to stitch punters up but he does always try to put a positive spin on most of his fancied runners. So I prefer to use his column as a reason to not back one if he does not say anything glowing about it.
