Grimes and Downes would hopefully mean the midfield is fine bar any further first team squad outgoings. Not sure what options there might be if Grimes doesn’t work out. Only other names I have seen mentioned is Hamer who is off to the prem and McAtee who seems to be a more advanced player? Unless there is another defensive type with Smallbone changing role. At the very least we then need a striker and I expect a full back. I hope a striker is regardless of outgoings but might be contingent on one leaving. Can’t see any CB signings until at least one of Lyanco or ABK leaves. And I don’t think the former has any takers. Another goalkeeper will surely only even be considered if McCarthy goes (come on Palace you know you want to).
I suspect the Flynn Downes deal is why the deal for JWP is only 30mill not 40. Obviously a bit risky as Downes could have rejected us but it seems to have worked out well for everyone.
But if we have to pay 10m in a year then that nets us 20m rather than 40. Is the option to loan him considered 10-20m. Not sure that fully makes sense
Those conversations will have been had prior to us accepting the deal. Seems the days of permission to speak to agents/players are long gone!
For the nerds.. Just found a video of all his touches vs. Saints in the FA cup last year. Great first touch, commanding presence, strong in the tackle. Genuinely looks class
