Sunderland travel to Deepdale to face Preston North End in the Championship. Last time out Sunderland lost to Crewe on penalties and Preston lost to Salford on penalties in the League Cup. Sunderland made 10 changes to the team that lost against Ipswich with only Dan Neil starting against Crewe. Chris Rigg became Sunderland’s youngest ever goal scorer with a well taken shot to equalise. Trai Hume has served his one match ban and is available for selection. Preston made eight changes from Saturday's 1-1 Championship draw at Bristol City and were quickly struggling at Deepdale. Connor McLennan's double gave Salford a 2-0 lead but goals from Ben Woodburn and Duane Holmes drew North End level and the tie finished 2-2. Tony Mowbray: “I've just said to them, they have to judge their performance levels and who they were playing against. “I think in the first half, we weren't brave enough. When you get opportunity in life, you have to grab it with both hands and grasp the nettle. “The messages are there every day - look forward, run forward, pass forward. We kept going sideways and around and around and around, we didn't cut through a team playing five at the back. We just didn't have the quality to punch the ball through and hurt them in the box. “In the second half, we addressed that a little bit, and created a few more opportunities. Ultimately, we're disappointed, we played against a League Two side who played with organisation and commitment. But we should have had more to win that game. We can't change the result now.” “We have to be better and more creative. I feel the core of the team is there. We can work it around the pitch, work it out to Roberts and Clarke. We just need people who arrive in the box to score goals, getting Bradley up to speed is a positive for that.” Ryan Lowe: "The first half wasn't what we wanted. I know we've got a few youngsters in there, and there's no blame on them - we've got seniors in there as well. "The second half was better after we made a couple of changes and probably should have had a couple more goals. "We're disappointed going out of the competition but our number one priority is the Championship. "Taking nothing away from them, they were good, especially first half, and dealt well with some pressure of ours. They were excellent and we just weren't at it." Once again many thanks for the match day thread look forward to it every week especially when I’m away at work escaping back home in the morning so I’ll get to watch This one Saturday, really hoping we can put last week behind us,gona go 2-0 to the lads with a nice performance and get the show on the road COME ON
Thanks RTB, we all know our issues up front so others have to chip in goals wise, we've got the talent we've just to to apply it and find a way to bring home the three points which would cheer everyone up. HTL.
Embo on the grass? On the training clip.? If we don't get 3 points we will feed in to KS and KLD's hands.
Thanks again RTB for a brilliant thread. A difficult game I'm sure they will want to beat us after last year. No doubt where our shortcomings are up front but I'm hoping for a better performance from the back 4 be nice to keep a clean sheet. Sadly this one is to early again for me so I'm hoping for Rotherham game for my season debut. Anyway I'm hoping the lads have been working hard and looking for a good performance from them. Any points on the board would be acceptable. Keep the faith lads and lasses.

Could do with a result to settle the nerves. Ipswich were on the crest of a wave but Preston aren't. Hopefully we'll see a little bit more from Hemir now he's had an introduction to the league. Intelligent players with the right attitude adapt quickly. Even if he just stands up there and challenges for every header it'll help. I know we like the fancy flicks and good football but we just have to get crosses into him. One touch and get it in there. Clarke and Roberts don't need to dribble round two men every time.
Great thread as always RTB, thanks mate. We're going to go there and bring home the three points to kick start the season and put an end to the negative crap being spouted on social media and the likes. 0-2 to the lads, ha'way!
From Mogga's presser: Nothing imminent with strikers, but confident we will be end of the window. Towing the party line by reminding everyone we have 3 strikers at the club, but 2 are injured Will take "months" to mould Hemir into the type of striker we want Mentioned work ethic and the need to get his fitness levels up Stewart out on the grass, kicking balls. 6-7 weeks before he's back on the pitch though Want him to sign a new contract, but all parties wanting to wait until he's fit Wait and see if the phone rings in next 3 weeks as to whether he stays
I’d take a draw now if offered, together with a fighting performance. 1-1 for me, though I’m worried. Bart
