I've said many a time, the fact that the boat has sailed on Kane and Son is indisputable. Thanks to 4+ years of chronic mismanagement, we are a minimum 5-6 years away from being a genuinely competitive side again - and even that is subject to a dozen ifs and buts, not least of all the fact that we have a new manager, plus the ascendance of the likes of Newcastle, Brighton, Villa, Brentford etc. - teams who were irrelevant when we peaked in 2017.

My preference from day one was always for Kane to come out and say "I'll stay this season and sign a new deal at the end if enough progress has been made". That would've turned the spotlight on Levy to deliver.

But I could never escape the nagging feeling that "enough progress" was inevitably out of our reach, even if Ange turns out to be Poch mk.II. We are so, so far away from the top teams in the league that even 4th next year would seem like a miracle. And would that be enough for Kane to put pen to paper? I have my doubts. Maybe top 4 and a trophy would do it but would I personally bet on that happening? Not a chance. I'd be delighted with top 6 and a trophy and would see that as a fantastic first step under Ange. Kane almost certainly would not. He doesn't have enough time left to take another 'first step'.

In fact, if most fans have come to the conclusion that we are a minimum 5-6 years away from being competitive at the very top, what's to say Kane himself hasn't come to exactly the same conclusion? And therein is the rub: that conclusion means he will not get a proper shot at the PL or CL with Spurs until the very tail end of his career. If I'm Kane, is that a risk worth taking? Or do I go abroad for 3-4 years, win some trophies and maybe even the CL, come back with that very annoying monkey off my back, break Shearer's record in my last few seasons, and ride off into the sunset?

I know which choice I'd make, every single time.

For me, the only piece in this whole saga that still surprises me is Real's lack of effort.

In terms of Los Ladrones, one thing that does have to be suggested is how they've rather openly been whispering promises top Kylian Mbappe of wearing their shirt if he lets his PSG contract run down for a year or two already, with PSG reportedly prepared to report Los Ladrones to UEFA for tapping him up...which will presumably go nowhere, as UEFA have very different definitions for offences depending on which club is accused (i.e. Dnipro get banned from UEFA competitions for FFP violations, while the both Chelsea and The Sheikh Mansour Team have won the Champions League in the last five years)

This does beg the question if Mbappe is the only high profile player they've done this with, because their shrug of the shoulders at losing Benzema continues to look odd - but if they get a replacement for free next year, and have Mbappe playing off of him...

People talk of Shearers goal record more than his Prem medal , somebody just reminded me of this and I had completely forgotten that he had won it

If Kane does go, who would you want as skipper when Hugo finally moves on

Newcastle have got Wilson and isak it's hard to believe you've ended up with a far worse strike force.

I fully understand Kane’s reasoning for leaving and I think as you’ve said he does see it similar to us in that we’re likely years away from being a top side and he just doesn’t have that time to wait.

It’s why my gripe isn’t with Kane wanting out, I’d be the same if I were a player as good as him, my gripe is with this football club failing it’s star players - again. It’s so much sour now too for fans with how much we’ve been exploited and alienated too.

I hate the fact the club I support is such a poisonous place at the moment.

It’ll be Son even though he’s not a leader.

It should be Bentancur though, he’s one of our best players and he seems like someone who can rally players on and off the pitch.

As usual I don't get the negativity. The choice is between losing Kane to Chelsea next season for nothing or getting £100m for him to go to Bayern. I can see no football reason why the first is better than the second. One season of Kane isn't worth £100m however you measure it. The only issue is whether we've lined up what we are going to spend the £100m on. Another good centre back and a decent young forward and we could actually be better off. If the £100m stays in the bank I will switch to the Levy out mob.

The Bale money was spent on 7 players, was it not ??

The intent was to strengthen the breadth of ability
across the entire squad, so that the frailties exposed in
2010-11 and 2011-12 would be eliminated, was it not ??

So is it your claim that tis Levys' fault that only one of
said 7 players (Eriksen) displayed an obvious on=pitch ROI ??

Well that’s not the choice is it? Because we have no idea who he’d join at the end of his deal.

One more season of Kane is worth way more to fans than £100m that none of us will pocket. And with our track record, the club would only spend that £100m on more Richarlison’s and Ndombele’s.

I can't see how this is a failure by the owners...they backed Pochettino to buy Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sessegnon and Conte with Bentancur, Kulusevski, Richarlison and Porro. That's about £300m of expensive players.

It's not to me. And I don't want to give Kane the choice of which club to join. And our track record is irrelevant because the past is no indication of the future.

Sky saying Kane is increasingly likely to stay at Spurs this season despite the agreed fee with Bayern. I'm sure that'll improve the mood assuming he does!

Kane will always have the choice of which club to join because he can reject any offers this month if he chooses, we can't make him go to Bayern if he didn't want to.

Our track record is absolutely relevant because we've failed with almost every transfer that's cost us £30m or more.

The football depends on the finances. That's always been partly true and it is getting more and more so.
We did build a team around Kane and it came second in the League and got to the CL final. That's the third best league performance in our history and the best European performance.

It's exactly because we have no control next season end that I think selling him now is a slightly better plan.
Track records are never relevant unless there is causality which doesn't exist in this case.
