This would actually be far better for us.

"Under SCMP rules, matchday and commercial income, TV revenue, merit payments based on league position, donations from the owners and injections of equity are included in the EFL’s turnover figure."

Essentially, if the owners really did want to put in lots of money, they could do so and enable us to get a decent squad together. Will be a true test of how committed the owners really are though.

It's the owners' actions I can't get my head around.
I know they're putting in millions every month, but why?
If there's no ambition to get us anywhere, why are they bothering?
    What's their endgame?
    Spot on re Ainsworth.

Maybe that's the plan, but they obviously can't say as much.

I don’t get it. Owners are allowed to pump their clubs full of unearned cash in League One and below cf Wrexham, but when they get to the championship (if they operate on this basis) they will have to drastically cut this ‘investment’ (ie gifting) to align with turnover based rules?*

I need to go back to FFP 101.

Seems to me the basic decision is do we want clubs to be run as owners’ play things, thus unsustainable in real world economic situations ie profit and loss accounting, or impose some real life rules. Seems to be somewhere in between at the moment.

*and where does our owners £2m a month loans converted to equity stand in this scenario?

It's mad, it's what enabled Sunderland to build a Championship team and yet doesn't allow an actual championship team to do the same. The W12 podcast chaps even pondered if GA might actually have preferred to have gone down.

If we can just get relegated thrice we’ll be free of this nonsense.
