WBA v Swansea Competition - Sky Bet Championship Venue - The Hawthorns Date - 12 August 2023 Kick off - 3:00pm Following 2 home matches against Birmingham in the Championship and the 3-0 win over Northampton in the EFL Cup, next up for Michael Duff’s Swansea squad is a first away match of the season at West Brom. On Wednesday, Head Coach Michael Duff claimed his maiden Swans’ victory as Joel Piroe's double and a fabulous Josh Ginnelly strike saw off Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup first round. Piroe tapped home early doors before scrambling in a second after the break. Ginnelly's long-range debut goal sealed Swansea's win, their first since Duff took charge in the summer. League One newcomers Northampton had their moments but were ultimately outclassed by their Championship hosts. Whilst the Swans were drawing with Brum, Harry Leonard and Dilan Markanday were scoring on their first league starts to give Blackburn victory against West Brom. Teenage striker Leonard and 21-year-old winger Markanday scored within two minutes of each other in the first half for an excellent start to their season as Rovers looked to build on last season where they just missed out on the play-offs. Matt Phillips pulled one back for the visitors in a much brighter performance after the break but the West Midlands side could not find the equaliser The opening day of the Championship season was a miserable day for Baggies’ manager Carlos Corberan, who was sent off for two yellow cards as his team's second-half fightback was not quite enough. Since (and including) their first meeting in October 1927, the Swans have played the Baggies on 49 occasions, winning 22, losing 17 with 10 matches drawn. Indeed, the Swans have won each of the last 4 matches against the Baggies. In the corresponding fixture last season, the Swans ran out 3-2 winners, thanks to Benda saving a penalty and a late winner from Obafemi: Turning to this coming Saturday, I think that the Swans are more than capable of returning to South Wales with a point, so I’m going for a 1-1 draw.
Cheers Taff. I think we can nick this, 1 - 2. As long as we show some progression, it's a long season so a draw would also be good.
I've successfully predicted both scorelines so far this season. But I'm afraid this one ends West Brom 2 Swansea 1.
Thanks Taff, yes I agree if there are no silly mistakes at the back (how many times have I said that) we can come away with a point. So it's 1-1 for me.
I'm still not convinced that we will be anything better than mid-to-lower half of the table. West Bromwich Albion 3 - 0 Swansea City. Keep up the good work.
Just bumped into a Spanish guy. Said he’s from Asturias, then said Oviedo to be precise. I said Michu country - turns out he knows him well, in the same tennis club…. What a small World
Sam Barrott will be the man in the middle when the Swans travel to The Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion this afternoon. (3pm kick-off) Yorkshire-based Barrott was promoted to Select Group 2 ahead of the current season, after taking charge of a handful of Championship matches last term. He oversaw the televised fixture between Sunderland and Ipswich Town last weekend, handing out five yellow cards and one red after Trai Hume committed two bookable offences. While this will be the first time Barrott has taken charge of a Swans league match, he was previously oversaw the Carabao Cup first-round clash at Reading in August 2021. The Swans won 3-0 on that night at the Select Car Leasing Stadium with goals from Ben Cabango, Joel Piroe and Joel Latibeaudiere sealing the victory. On that day, Barrott handed out four yellow cards with Dan Williams and Kyle Naughton booked for the Swans. On Saturday, he will be assisted by Jonathan Hunt and Mark Dwyer. Simon Mather will be the fourth official.
Ollie Cooper is included in the Swansea City starting line-up as head coach Michael Duff makes one change from the opening weekend for the trip to West Bromwich Albion (3pm). The Wales international midfielder comes into the XI at The Hawthorns in the solitary alteration from the draw with Birmingham. Ben Cabango is fit enough to start after missing the Carabao Cup clash against Northampton due to a niggle. New signing Charlie Patino is named among the substitutes and would make his Swans debut if called upon. Carl Rushworth continues in goal, with Nathan Wood, Harry Darling and Cabango making up the Swansea defence. Josh Key and Harrison Ashby occupy the wing-back slots, while Cooper slots in alongside captain Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton in midfield. Jerry Yates and Joel Piroe lead the line for the visitors. West Bromwich Albion: Alex Palmer, Darnell Furlong, Conor Townsend, Cedric Kipre, Semi Ajayi, Jed Wallace (captain), Jayson Molumby, Matt Phillips, Erik Pieters, John Swift, Okay Yokuslu. Substitutes: Josh Griffiths, Kyle Bartley, Josh Maja, Nathaniel Chalobah, Jeremy Sarmiento, Alex Mowatt, Taylor Gardner-Hickman, Tom Fellows, Ethan Ingram. Swansea City: Carl Rushworth; Harry Darling, Ben Cabango, Nathan Wood; Harrison Ashby, Jay Fulton, Matt Grimes (captain), Ollie Cooper, Josh Key; Joel Piroe, Jerry Yates. Substitutes: Andy Fisher, Joe Allen, Josh Ginnelly, Jamie Paterson, Charlie Patino, Mykola Kuharevich, Liam Cullen, Kyle Naughton, Azeem Abdulai.
