Unless he’s looking to get out now (which would be a quite remarkable turn of events), the way to get a return on his investment is by getting back to the PL.
**** Saturday's going to be tough now knowing it's going to be Prowsie's last ever game in a Saints shirt. Part of me wishes that he gets sold before Saturday. But I was at Coventry when he made his debut as a 16 year old in the FA Cup so I want to be there for his last game as well.
By the time JWP, Lavia and ABK have been sold, we would have recouped over £130million in sales, and with the sales / release of Walcott, Ely, Diallo, Willy, DCC, Salisu, Orsic added in, the salary savings would be £4 - £5 million a year. I think there could be more departures than the 3 I’ve mentioned and I wouldn’t be surprised if we spend £50 million plus in the next 3 weeks. If we don’t we will be very short in several positions. But as always, let’s just wait and see.
He’s replaceable. Think if he’s the only one we lose from the starting 11 last Friday, and we add 3 or 4 quality players in the next 3 weeks, all will be good.
JWP is more than just a player in a starting XI, thoigh. He is a modern day Mr Southampton. Our academy poster boy. Everything we stand for. Sure, we can replace him from a footballing perspective, but not what he means to us and what he stands for.
And none of those points will bother him as he signs for West Ham. He’ll move on, and Southampton Football Club will move on, as will most of us fans.
The bench tonight showed where we are short - defence and central midfield. This isn’t factoring where upgrades are needed such as striker Hopefully all these funds could also potentially be used to get some of the dross out - going towards payoffs or subsidised wages for example
Yeah. The math on 'selling the silverware' is so bad that there's absolutely no chance they will pursue it. We need to raise funds to remain within the Championship financial rules, which are stringent, but the idea that we're selling players to line the owner's pockets is profoundly absurd.
Not for me, Shea Charles incoming £12.5m, Ryan Manning looking an astute free. The players leaving are those expected to do so and trim the bloated squad. It doesn't look like asset stripping to me. I'll judge at the end of the window by the squad then and results in the meantime. https://www.transfermarkt.com/fc-southampton/transfers/verein/180 NB The window closes Friday, 1st September at 11 pm.
It doesn’t really matter how much they spend unless they improve the scouting. If they spend another billion in the same way we have this season we will still end up in league 2 or below. Time to start identifying proper players with the correct attitude. Important few weeks.
Hopefully we will get some strong incoming rumors today with Lavia & JWP exits getting closer. At least one defensive midfielder(Downes, Griimes) and then time to invest in a striker with funds secured.
Yeah I certainly hope so. But if they all go, and they could if the numbers are right & we replace with £10-12M youngsters / no Championship experience, it could be difficult. Yes, I accept Manning & to a degree Bree are experienced campaigners in this league but selling your best, without adequate replacements & trying to get them to gel is a massive challenge.
