How often to 5th choices play? And I mean when you have a manager who picks a settled side rather than changing it every match
I would assume, given how close Lyanco was to leaving, that Awe might be bumped up to 4th choice before the window closes. We don't really know the state of play with ABK either. Presumably one of our more attractive players, and being a German international you'd think he might be keen to be playing in a top league again if he can. Difficult to know to what extent his injury has been keeping him out in pre-season/so far vs where his head is at too.
Please, please, please... let Lavia leave today! For £50M. And then let us buy someone great who wants to be here. And get rid of Lyanco, Djenepo, Aribo and OnuachuO... Please?
Been very quiet with ABK. Is he in training do we know? Barely seen him in pre season but not many links to a move either.
I’d have assumed that we intend on getting first team ready replacements for any central defender that leaves. Although signing someone who will be actively 4th choice will be difficult unless they are versatile in other positions such as full back or central midfield. Indeed Charles might be that 4th choice for defence but higher up the list for midfield. Potentially opening up another midfield slot. Still remains to be seen whether we sign one or two more midfielders if JWP joins Lavia in leaving But it’s always going to be difficult for us to sign players who can do a job but will know they are joining to sit on the bench. It is why we struggled with back up for Romeu for so long
From what I have read, we should be keeping a pathway open for Awe. He is incredibly highly rated and we need to provide him a footballing platform.
Yeah it will be good to see all of that lot gone along with McCarthy. But we’d be lucky if even half of them go. I expect some might go on deadline day loans potentially with subsidised wages This is where my musings about which players we are earmarking replacement for and which we aren’t comes from. I expect most of these can all just be removed from the squad as late as deadline day with minimal impact to squad balance - apart from Lyanco as we probably do need 4 first team central defenders. But the same isn’t true for the likes of Lavia, KWP, JWP and Adams
Difficult to say, but feels like Awe could be a 4th choice CB here this season if we do manage to shift Lyanco. If ABK goes instead, or if they both go then we'd need to bring in another CB to compete with Bedders and Stephens, with Awe the 4th choice. We still have Charles that can play there if needed, but given Lavia will go and Charles is the only other out and out DM in the squad I wouldn't think we'd choose to play him as CB unless absolutely necessary. If JWP and Lavia go I wouldn't be surprised if we only signed one replacement. Outs: Diallo, JWP, Lavia, Ins: Charles, Smallbone and 'new signing'. Even though I am very much in the camp of thinking we need more than one DM (not least when our solitary DM is a youngster in his first full season), that never normally stops us going into the season with just the 1. Remember the good old days when we had Morgan, Big Vic and Cork!
