England were under par, but the commentators were hilarious. According to them, England were completely under siege, which they weren't. Anyway, you always need a lucky result in every tournament and that was it. Lovely jubbly.
By the skin of our teeth.......Nigeria were very good value and could/should have won match, especially after the James dismissal, which they never really seemed to benefit from? So James misses just the next game? Same punishment as two yellows?
Don't know if this was mentioned on TV, but what would have happened if the teams has been level after ten penalties and England had no one to take the eleventh? Probably just go back to number one I suppose, but I was wondering if they might have to forfeit.
It was not good, neither was the performance quite as bad as maked out. Good penalties... But need a good plan for quarter finals...that don't involve James

Great to see our Aussies girls have a win, along with Sam Kerr making a return. Great to see England win as well. Could it be Australia vs England final ?
FIFA Women's World Cup: England star hailed for sporting gesture after scoring winning penalty against Nigeria Stuff sports reporters12:04, Aug 08 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. Manchester City forward Kelly kept her cool from the spot to convert the winning penalty in a dramatic shootout with Nigeria in Brisbane after their last 16 tie finished goalless after extra time. The Lionesses had played more than half an hour with 10 players after star midfielder Lauren James was sent off for stamping on Michelle Alozie’s back. But Kelly – a second-half substitute – once again came up clutch for her team when she rifled her penalty into the top corner of the net to spark wild celebrations among the English contingent inside Brisbane Stadium. Beth England, Rachel Daly and Alex Greenwood all held their nerve for England, allowing Kelly to seal the deal and send the Lionesses into the last eight, where they will face either Colombia or Jamaica in Sydney on Saturday. However, they had been given an almighty scare by a Nigerian side ranked 36 places below them in the FIFA rankings, with the Super Falcons rattling the bar through former England youth international Ashleigh Plumptre and having the better of the chances in an enthralling game. One of the Super Falcons’ best performers during a hugely encouraging tournament was goalkeeper and captain Chiamaka Nnadozie, who kept three clean sheets and made several fine saves against England to deny Rachel Daly and Alessia Russo. So when Kelly saw a heartbroken Nnadozie lying on the turf, her gloves covering her eyes, after failing to stop her penalty, the 25-year-old quickly went over to console her in scenes reminiscent of Andrew Flintoff and Brett Lee’s iconic exchange in the 2005 Ashes test at Edgbaston. Her sporting gesture was immediately hailed on social media, with Kelly also praised for her ”class” as she waved away a camera operator who tried to capture Nnadozie’s reaction, reportedly telling him to “f..k off”. Kelly’s England team-mate Greenwood also joined her in comforting the visibly distraught Nnadozie while the rest of the players wildly celebrated their great escape. “So selfless and proper sportsmanship”, one fan wrote of Kelly’s actions. “The highest level of fair play”, wrote another. please log in to view this image SCREENGRAB England’s Chloe Kelly waves away a TV camera trying to capture Chiamaka Nnadozie's devastation. “Chloe Kelly more concerned for Nigeria goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie than celebrating. That’s what sport’s about. Play the game, respect your opponent,” wrote journalist Sanny Rudravajhala. Monday night was not the first time Kelly has come to the Lionesses’ rescue. She also scored the winner in the European Championship final against Germany at Wembley last year that ended England’s major trophy drought, famously whipping off her jersey to expose her sports bra. And Kelly was England's saviour once more in April when she struck the winning spotkick to win the inaugural women’s Finalissima against Brazil in front of 83,132 fans in London. “We’ve been practising a lot and it has been working. For me, I was going to score,” Kelly said later when asked what was going through her mind as she stepped up to take the crucial penalty. We dig deep, we dig deep as a group, we believe in our ability; first and foremost we believe in what we are being told to do.” England, ranked fourth in the world, are now the bookmakers’ favourites to win the title after the defending champion United States and second-ranked Germany were knocked out of the tournament. But they will have to play a lot better than they did against Nigeria if they are to become only the second team after Germany to be world and European champions.
