HT. 0-0. We struggled to retain the ball or win possession for the first 20 mins, but after that, we outplayed them and should be ahead IMO. Havertz has had a very good game, but he should have finished at least one of those two chances that Ortega saved. We’ve been rotating the ball and finding pockets of space really well, though. We looked sharp and crisp with our passing, and our defending in 1v1 and against decoy runs/combination play has been superb. Saliba and Timber especially have been imperious. Let’s hope we keep it up and hopefully get a couple goals in the second half.
Happy with that tbh. Looking pretty good. Rice needs to get into the game a little more as does Saka. Saliba has been typically solid. Haverts doing well as a false 9.
Martinelli needs to be doing better with his deliveries.. Saliba Gabriel Rice Partey Haverts White all over 6'0 Feels like the good old days!
Lee Dixon is a moron. A couple of gems from today.. "I'm not big on formations" "Sometimes it's a foul in the first half but not in the second, I call it managing the game"
Arsenal win on penalties to grab their 17th Community Shield . Good stuff. Don’t really care about the result, was more focused on performance and thought we put in a good shift against a top calibre side. Some excellent individual performances and Ramsdale again making a crucial save in the shootout for us to win. Although winning the CS is no guarantee/indication of future success, you'd prefer to win it than not. Also, Pep's face at the end was a sight to behold . Hopefully we can get over this hoodoo against City when the season actually starts. Should be a morale/confidence booster if nothing else.
I actually thought Haverts was very good as a false 9. Rice is starting to settle now and getting better every game. Timber was unbelievable, might be a bit harsh on Tierney but I don't think Palmer scores if Timber was still on the pitch.
I thought Tierney could have done better for their goal and it was a shame it happened just after he came on, because it really put the spotlight on him. Previous to that, Timber had notably made several blocks to deny City and overall he had a really good game 1st choice for me too.
Early days, but it bodes well that we went up against their full strength team and beat them. Psychologically, that win yesterday was massive.
I hope you're right, but we'll need to prove it when the PL season starts and we play them. In 2015, we beat Mourinho for the 1st time in the Community Shield (1-0 win, Oxlade-Chamberlain with the winner). Our record against Chelsea prior to that was horrible. Despite people thinking that the Community Shield victory would break that mental barrier against a bogey side, they beat us 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and 1-0 at The Emirates. They finished 10th that season. We play City in October at The Emirates. We have to win that game IMO.
After the first 20 minutes I think we looked the better team... I particularly liked our press and how we dominated the midfield. Compared to last years games where we never really had any control , it was a marked improvement. We'll see whether that translates to competitive games, but looks good.
