You should try it....it makes it much more fun to watch football if you don't have to worry about all the stuff that may have gone wrong.

They may well have an edge temporarily even if it can't be proved statistically but it won't be a lasting one because any good quant could build a similar model.

Data abalytics systems are not based on models.

You must be using the word model in a different way to me then. You don't have unique performance data on players so you have to model performance assessment at least.

Any cursory definition I give, I suspect would be widely accepted with little contention.

"You don't have unique performance data on players so you have to model performance assessment at least."

I don't know what data people have on players,
not where such "source data" comes from.

If a model is being used, then tis subject to trail by
description and prediction, Given your claim on the
scarcity of source data, than the model will fall the
first test (unless the model has miraculously captured
the essence of the reality from the outset) .

There is loads of data but you need to interpret it to measure performance. The model defines how you should interpret it....and can be tested before it is used to make predictions.

Got the here we go for Veliz.

A couple of journos, including one of the guys that initially broke the news yesterday, have also claimed that we don’t want to loan him back. I’m starting to think the recent developments with CBs and now the Veliz move pushing forward imply we might be closer than initially expected to selling Kane.

Gave in to temptation and watched the obligatory YouTube compilations. Even kept the ****e music on as a gesture of goodwill.

First thoughts?

Impressive. Highlight was his awareness of positioning and how to use his body to either hold up play or take a defender out of the equation. Very, very developed considering he is only 19 years old.

Looks like largely an 18 yard box striker, strong in the air and has good movement and anticipation.

Argentina has one of the most physically tough leagues in the world so I reckon he'll be fine here.

With this confirmed and Orban apparently of interest (he's one I'd love us to sign), I think it is safe to say that this is sadly the end of the line for Parrott and Scarlett.

I definitely wouldn’t write Scarlett off. Still only 19 and make no mistake he’s a top tier English talent. I think he’s also capable of - if needed - being pushed into an inside forward role.

Parrott is a little harder as he’s at an age where he should probably be in and around the squad now yet would seem to be behind Scarlett in the pecking order. Injuries and poor loan decisions have ruined his development.

As for Veliz I watched what Tim Vickery said today and whilst a lot of people tried diminishing his opinion by mentioning that he said Paulinho would be like Lampard (which at the time was probably quite a fair observation) he gave his insight into Veliz. Said basically he’s a physically powerful player at such a young age but that he doesn’t think he’s quite ready for the Premier League yet. Also highlighted that Argentinians in his mould haven’t done too greatly in the Premier League before, with the best strikers being the skilful, smaller frame ones like Aguero, Tevez and now Alvarez.

He does seem to have quite sound technical ability though judging by the comps so I don’t view him as a typical “lump it” striker like some of the names Vickery mentioned as those who struggled. Can’t be sure either way though to be honest, none of us had heard of him until yesterday so I won’t pretend to be an expert. I also enjoy when we sign players completely under the radar, lesser expectations on them allow them to surprise fans. Besides if he’s part of the data based system we’re meant to be adopting and Ange has given the thumbs up then I’m all for it. Plus, he’d only need to score two league goals in his first season to be an improvement on the last striker we signed…

TBH I think you're being a bit kind to parrot...think he didn't have a good attitude...pretty sure that he fell in with dodgy characters

I know nothing about Veliz, but a 19 year old Argentina youth international is exactly the kind of player Spurs should be signing. The best thing they could be doing is trying to sign the best players in the 18-20 age group. Any older, and the best players will be snapped up by richer clubs. Younger would be great as well, but are even more of a crap shoot.
Of course, the downside for players that young is the crap shoot aspect. Older players are a little more predictable. After all, who could have guessed that Richarlison would be a complete waste of money, a ridiculously bad acquisition who not only didn't score, but did quite a bit to destroy the great form Son and Kulusevski had? :emoticon-0138-think:headbang:

I'll give you a hint.

"redwhiteandermblue, post: 15937457, member: 1008020"]Richarlison was literally and figuratively all over the pitch in leading Everton straight down the tube last year. He led by example in the race to the bottom, failing to do what needed to be done game after game and in a wide variety of roles. He was equally ineffectual behind Calvert-Lewin and in leading the line himself.

There are a lot of attackers who run around energetically and get in people's way. Gordon, for example, was great at it last year. All it takes is athleticism and desire, neither of which are in short supply. But for better or worse the game's outcome is determined by getting the ball in the net, which is famously a much more difficult endeavor, and one which Richarlison isn't any good at

The idea that a CL club would spend big on a player who was a flop for a historically disastrous club is ridiculous on the face of it, yet here we are.

"redwhiteandermblue, post: 15940801, member: 1008020"]Spurs would do much better to study how Everton market their flops than to add a really expensive one to their list.

Richarlison is the weaker of the two strikers on the fifth worst club in the league.

He's below average in 9/10 passing and shooting stats FBref measures. The one where he's above average, assists, looks like a fluke, since his expected assists are also well below average.

He looks to me like he's got a lot of headless chicken in him, which would explain why he falls down so much.

But Everton need to sell him both to meet FFP regulations and to get a striker who can do the job, there's a lot of hype around him, so Spurs step in with a huge bid. It's certainly very obliging.
"redwhiteandermblue, post: 15925038, member: 1008020"]Richarlison scored 7 non-penalty goals this year, and 6 last year. I don't think he's good at anything but flopping, where he's world class. Seeing him warm up before Spurs matches always filled me with confidence.
This is my fear. Whilst it’s probably one of our best strategies, it’s also full of risk.
I can’t remember the last “amazing teenage wonder kid” we signed. Bale is the only one that springs to mind, and even that took a positional change to unearth how good he really was.

History tells me that the very recent “edging closer” news regarding VDV and Tapsoba, as well as Veliz would suggest that Kane is going.
I’ll be amazed if he’s still with us by the end of the transfer window, and will happily eat my words.

but I genuinely worry for us if we’re losing his 30 goals a season in the hope a 19 year old is gonna fix it. And that’s presuming the defenders we purchase fix the problems in defence!

Scarlett unlikely, after all he's 19 and only just getting his feet wet with first team football, so there's definitely time for him to develop

Parrott on the other is certainly more at risk, as he's already turned 21 and seems to have lost the pace he had in our youth teams due to his various injuries, none of his loans (outside of MK Dons) have particularly impressed from an end product perspective, and hanging around with associates of the Kinahan cartel is not doing him many favours

Ange has reportedly told both Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon to find new clubs this month, with Ange reportedly freezing out Rodon

Sanchez continues to generate interest, though, with Fulham reportedly keen - which somehow hasn't generated talk of a Sanchez/Adarabioyo swap deal yet...

I'm not worried at all about the undoubted risks of targeting youth players, because it's the only chance Spurs can compete for big trophies again. So it's that or mediocrity. That or what Arsenal was for a long time, minus the fourth place trophy. A bunch of self-satisfied fat cats, playing out the string of careers which will have nothing to show for it. Spurs can be mediocre without Kane. And mediocre is what Spurs will be this year and next year, at the least, in any case. The question is whether there's a chance Spurs will be good in a few years.

The risks of targeting youth players are lessened by total commitment to the strategy. Trying to pick up the odd one is indeed a recipe for failure. Try to get a good chunk of a certain age range, and the odds of success are much better. If you fail, fire whoever made the picks and try again. You'll get it right eventually. It seems to me that when a club does adopt a youth strategy, their chances of success are high. Look at Spurs under Pochettino and Arsenal with Arteta. Seems to me both clubs have tried once and succeeded once.

Yeah you weren’t alone in your thoughts, I could probably find very similar posts myself.

He has literally zero standout attributes, has a less than impressive scoring ratio (even prior to joining us!) and on top of that he dives about the place.

Usually when we sign a player there’s excitement and optimism, even with Ndombele and Lo Celso as no one could’ve predicted they’d have been as terrible as they were but with Richarlison, it was sort of like “what the hell are we doing?!” when we saw not only our interest in him but how much we’d have to pay.

It’s hands down the dumbest signing the club has ever made when you factor in known ability and cost. He’s a £15m-£20m player tops, Everton actually managed to make £100m from the sales of him and Gordon… whoever dealt with those deals would be welcomed here to help us try to shift a bunch of our players!
