Good Morning. It's Thursday 3rd August, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

    Trio inquire about Joseph availability

Spanish media outlet 'Marca' have revealed that Swansea City, Sampdoria and Wolfsburg are among a long list of teams to have inquired about the availability of Mateo Joseph next season.

The 19yo, a £900,000 purchase from Espanyol during the 2022 January transfer window settled into life in West Yorkshire very quickly. In his first full season, he netted 16 times (in 26 appearances) for the U21's, and was selected by England to play at U20's World Cup netting twice in six appearances.

It was hoped that he will play a major part in Daniel Farke's first team this season, but as of yet, has only been used sparingly.

Hay highlights frailties ahead of season opener

Elland Road journalist Phil Hay had highlighted frailties at both ends of the pitch as areas of concern, ahead of their season opener against Cardiff City this Sunday. Up front, Patrick Bamford and Georginio Rutter have their work cut out to convince the Leeds faithful that they have what it takes to fire the Whites back to the top flight.

Injuries have taken its toll on Paddy over the past few seasons, which in turn, have affected his all round contribution on the pitch, but if Leeds can keep him fit, he will score goals in the Championship. Rutter on the other hand is still an unknown quantity. Nobody, including himself are quite sure where he should be playing. His link up play is good, and has shown some nice touches during pre-season, but Leeds need goal scorers, and the French U21 International does not seem to have that predatory instinct.

The Leeds defence has been more leaky than a sieve over the past few years. They conceded 78 times last season, more than any other top flight club. On top of this, Leeds have lost their two best defenders over the Summer (Wober and Koch). Daniel Farke's style of play will help strengthen their back line. As we have seen pre-season, the big German likes to play possession football, and if Leeds can tighten up at the back, and cut out stupid mistakes, they will be difficult to break down.

"The past two years have been a damning indictment of Leeds’ defending. The automatic answer to this would be to say that fixing that part of the team is priority number 1. But Farke’s system is different to Jesse Marsch’s and defensively, the way in which United set up — with their attention to retaining possession — might serve to tighten them up naturally. The bigger question seems to be: where are the goals coming from?"

"It’s not that Leeds have no attacking quality in their team, but it is impossible to look back at either of Norwich’s promotions under Farke and ignore the influence of Teemu Pukki. Who in this United squad is scoring 20-plus goals? Can Patrick Bamford do it? Can Georginio Rutter? The jury is out on that front — especially with both going off injured in their final friendly — and history shows that many of the sides who escape the Championship have someone truly prolific in their line-up."

    Are they good enough

There seems to be a massive differential in standards between the senior members of the Elland Road squad, and the youngsters, aspiring to play catch-up!

Leeds have invested heavily in their academy in recent years, and have some breathtaking talent. Regrettably, apart from Charlie Cresswell, Cody Drameh and Archie Gray, the fledglings are struggling to take-off. It was hoped, that by dropping down a division we would see the likes of Greenwood (injured), Gyabi, Poveda, Perkins, Shackleton, Bate, Klaesson, Joseph and Gelhardt having far more of an impact, especially with the start of their new campaign only days away.

It's going to be a long hard season where Leeds may have to rely on their younger talent, but shouldn't they be playing first team football, even if its not at Elland Road?

Morning everyone i have been waiting years for players to break through. When will some of them get the chance to play. Drameh and Gyabi should be ready for this level by now. Joseph is fast and can score unlike Rutter. Archie Gray i do not want to see lumps kicked out of him by some championship clogger. He needs to be managed and looked after. Big problem for me is where is our midfield enforcer?. Who is going to look after the younger ones. Another mid and striker should have been signed by now. Paddy Marathe said we had players lined up so have they turned us down. Nine players have left to free up the wage bill. We got a fee for Rodrigo and some loan fees for the others. So on paper the 7 million for Ampadu is virtually covered. So where is this quality investment we were promised.

    Morning all

I think we have enough quality to pick up early points, but it is going to require patience from us all if those points are not as hoped for, at least until the transfer window has closed and we see what our lot is until January

I'm not sure I understand this: we would see the likes of Greenwood (injured), Gyabi, Poveda, Perkins, Shackleton, Bate, Klaesson, Joseph and Gelhardt having far more of an impact, especially with the start of their new campaign only days away.

The season hasn't started so what kind of impact could they possibly have made, I would also say preseason Poveda has been on fire and Klaesson doesn't matter as we have Darlow

So why are we now clear second favourites to win the League ?

We're also odds on at 4/6 to finish in the play offs.

Whatever has happened so far the bookmakers have shortened both prices so we can't be doing too much wrong.

Assuming we play with three attackers we only need two in the middle. Ampadu is an excellent signing and when Adams is back they’ll be a right force with Greenwood, Gray, Gyabi as options, I’d imagine we’re looking to bring one more in but the uncertainty around Adams won’t be helping matters

Just because the opening post says they’re not ready it doesn’t mean it’s true, let’s see how they perform first. Last thing we want to see is anymore spending on players like Roca, Aaronson and McKennie or blowing the budget on players not ready

It's a very hard window for us to be honest because we can't go out shelling 3,4 year contracts to players who are championship standard unless we are staying there. if we have major expectations of going up which we should have, players coming in have to have premier League potential or Prem experience these are not cheap. As on the outs surely the club know now who is with us and who isn't. if some players still have doubts get them out so we can replace them. we have less than a month left in the window. not only that is disrupts our season which is now here! It's all good bringing in a few new players but the season is starting these players are going to take a month or so to gel with the club and squad and get the style we are playing. get these at the back end of August it could be October before we see the best of them that's 2-3 month already into a season it's not hitting the ground running is it.
We have a team to play ball but I don't think we have a squad to cover a hectic, brutal League we are already struggling upfront and we haven't even kicked a ball. it shouldn't be like this we been through this the last 2 season's and look where it got us relegation that's where hoping and we'll be ok got us. have we learned our lesson at this present time no Drameh, Firpo, Dallas, Adams, Harrison. Bamford, Rutter, all very likely to miss the kick off Dallas might never be the player we had. Bamford is becoming the new Forshaw and is his heart here anymore?. Drameh,Firpo,Adams,Harrison all still being linked away. What I want to hear from the club is Adams,Harrison,Gnonto,Sini,Rutter.Summerville are all staying unless we get a fee we can't turn down. Fed up of all this loan shyte and release clause shyte we are 3 days away from kick off we need to know what's the plan and put these players noses in the dirt if they still want out as I'm sure the fans will make their choice if we knew. They are either with us or not and as coops said if your not fcuk off.

I would have expected that at least some of those names to have the same kind of impact that Gray has had pre-season.

Morning all. I thought bookies odds were governed by the amount of cash placed by punters on any bet. Also clubs with bigger fanbases will throw more money at it. Remember we were fifth and sixth favourites for relegation most of last season and some saw that as meaning wed be safe. Means nothing same as pundits opinions <doh>

Good morning all. If the trio of clubs after Joseph is true then he should be ready for the championship. We don’t have many forward options so why not give him a go against Cardiff. With all respect to Sparky, they aren’t the strongest team in the division to play him. Also Sonny Perkins was on the verge of the West Ham first team so surely he should be good enough for the championship.

Plus the fact Sonny Perkins scored against Cardiff earlier this year in the cup. Typical goal poachers goal in stoppage time in the cup.

Bookmakers have to create a market first and so before a bet was placed it was they who decided Leeds should be 2nd favs for promotion. The odds have now shortened slightly due to punters placing bets on that to happen.

The bookmakers will adjust their odds after each round of matches to try and entice punters to place more bets. If we win they will shorten and if we lose then they'll likely lengthen. Punters going on now think we'll get off to a decent start and so the odds are more likely to shorten in the coming weeks. If they didn't think that then they should wait and get a better price if we have a shaky start to the season.

Over the past few months we were all on board with needing the defence shoring up, getting a creative midfielder, keeper and a regular quality goal scorer. Perhaps cresswell will work, although he played 28 games in the championship for Millwall . Not sure why he wasn’t played more, injury perhaps, or still learning? Dramas played 16 times for Luton, plus Cardiff experience. 38 championship games so should be ready. Byram I’m not sure about what he has left in him. With darlow and Ampadu added we may just have enough at the back. Need junior to step up now. Midfield still needs the creative game changer, pablo got us over the line in many games. Perhaps an experienced enforcer as Wakey says, particularly if Adams does go.

we are still very weak up front, we need that goal scorer or two. One that takes the chances when given them.

With a few days before we kick off, I feel we are starting to drift into an acceptance that the kids will tear up the league because we’ve maybe given up on expecting to get the key signings over the door still. They kids haven’t done much with the chances they already had at Leeds and on loan, so that concerns me. This league is tough, we know every game is a cup final for us, we need to cope physically on the pitch and also with the volume of games. Sky will feck us about fixture wise and who knows what may happen with our mates at the efl if one of our players forgets to tie a shoelace.

Relegated Stoke were favourites to bounce back up and were taken to the cleaners by us. We’ve had a very disrupted preseason, hardly scored and lack the 2 or 3 key players still. I’m still guarded about setting my expectations for the season ahead, but am firmly in the belief that we need that creative mid and striker sorting. No more square pegs and wingers up front etc etc.

    Morning all

Gotta agree with Wakey on the kids' front. It's now been 4 or 5 years that I've been waiting for the kids to come good. We've been told now by certain sections of the fan base about how astonishing Cresswell is. I think the term put up or shut up now comes to mind. We've spent so many years vacuuming up talent from across the leagues and have basically ignored the 1st team until last summer. It's excellent Radz and Orta had a 5 year plan but it shot us in the arse.

The summer has been a disaster. Let's not sugarcoat with excuses it's been a disaster. We've been told there were players waiting in the wings and only 2 have been signed. Where's Phillips and Kamara?

If anyone thinks we're going to sail through a 46 game league season plus cup games then you're sad;y mistaken.
