We were then. Now English football is a ****ing tragedy as proven by the ownership up the road. Games absolutely gone and if we’re realistic there’s no way you can compete with it.

We all praise Brighton/Brentford for doing it right but at the end of the day they’ll never compete with clubs spending £200m+ a season.

Tbh, I don't want to want to compete with that lot up the road, they're gone now.
They can win all the trophies they want, i couldnt give a ****e....it's not the newcastle i know and hate. They will be forever tarnished now, a pariah club....and they know it.
They say they "have their club back"...that couldn't be further from the truth if they tried.....they're just too thick to see it.

Give me a Brighton or a Brentford any day of the week.....better still, a Sunderland.

@Wardley Makem made a cracking post earlier about what makes Sunderland, Sunderland.
I will take that all day long.

The point is it’s not just them though. Arsenal and United have a net spend of £700m+ in the last 5 seasons then you have the teams like Newcastle, Spurs, Villa who aren’t even really guaranteed top 6 teams yet are spending a fortune.

So what’s our end goal? In a few years it’s going to end up with the PL having a guaranteed top 10 and the rest will be battling for a mid table finish at best. Something has to change.

It's funny to see all the money spent by Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Everton, Newcastle, Arsenal, etc ...

... then not even coming close to City <laugh>

I hope not, it's so embarrassing for the PL ...

... be great if City have the title wrapped up by Christmas.

A bit of a prediction, if Kyril and Juan don't dig in their deep wealthy pockets, all the hope and promise will be gone after 8 games.
This is not a better structure than was promised.
I also believe we should have sorted the depth of the squad way before now.
TM had give Kristjaan his wanted list of 5 players, he has 1.
The rest are the recruitment teams picks.
This in my opinion undermines TM position.
    Just my thoughts mind.

By his own admission mowbray doesn't do transfers and isn't his remit. Hardly surprising that the club have signed players they've been tracking and scouting via the recruitment team rather than a list from mogga. Come on now. Nonstarter

Thing is TM is a head coach not a manager, I'm sure he'll let the recruitment team know of players he would like but he's not in a position to hand them a wanted list that's not his job, the recruitment team may have selected all our other signings but that's what they are supposed to do, not sure where we've fallen short on what was promised, what was promised that hasn't been kept too, our aim was to stay in the championship last season, we more than achieved that.
We haven't sold anyone yet and strengthed from last season, the plan was never to go out and splash loads of cash

I know both KLD and KS, and personally i think they underestimate the strength of the championship for this season.
They by appointing the new marketing chap realise the whole running of the club is to big a job for SD, happy they saw that as another sign of his weakness as COO. chief operations officer. what a joke he is.

Iain your right, but for us to improve we need strength in depth, he do not have that.
We should have had the RS situation cleared up, by either selling him or give him a contract subject to his fitness level, we have done that before.
It just seems as if we are meandering in to this season half cocked.

Yeah but we play a very high intense high pressure style of play. A dodgy achilles might not be up to it. Be probably fine in a normal 442 set up

Still time left. We have decent squad depth but 'just' need quality up top and in defensive midfield to make us a threat.

Surely a forward line with some depth of a track record of scoring goals in senior football is the missing bit. We’ve plugged height and physicality but not the goal gap. Even worse if Clarke and Stewart leave and I think they might well do.

TM is a head coach not manager thus has very little say on incomings

Can definitely understand where you are coming from but I think we Sunderland fans are good at appreciating other teams strengthening but underestimating our own.

Like others I think we need to make a couple more key signings and we can go into this season all guns blazing !
