Interesting, pretty sure we were never that high in the ‘wages leaguer table’ under Ashton and LJ…..

As only a few of us acknowledge Supcon, wages were generally higher back then. Most championship clubs were paying them. Only a tiny few clubs managed to do well by not spending much.
Compared solely with todays budget we spent high back then - but so did everyone. As you said we weren't at the top of the spending list.
It's very similar to the property - or the stock market - Ashton's model was buying and selling players like speculators do (did) on the property market. That's all fine when the market is steadily trending upwards - and there were some successes (Brownhill, Webster, Reid, even Pack) as well as some duds - but as soon as the market has a 'wobble' (like COVID) then that model fails spectacularly - just like with the property or financial market.
On the pitch it also meant that the players were transient, because you needed to keep selling in order to remain solvent - to the extent that you can't keep a stable team - we REALLY missed Brownhill when he left in particular.....

I much prefer today's more cautious, sustainable model, given the current financial climate - but I also don't look back on the Ashton/LJ time as being as particularly poisonous as some others do.

Onwards and (hopefully) upwards - and I'm definitely feeling positive towards the coming season as I said earlier. COYRs.

Very well said. As you state, a small number of us see it for what it was, and not as an excuse to deride a person that they had disdain from the moment he joined us (and I still have yet to have it explained on here exactly why - except he was small.....) COVID, was just a convenient excuse to go after him when the CLUB transfer model failed. I dislike bullying as much or more as some state they hate nepotism, which is why I defend that individual on here.

I read both Ashton - I like to hear both sides.
I think it’s fair to assume that the sports sections of both are minimally political…..

Ashton, what about the Voice paper.

Which one are you, a Turnip Muncher or a Pitchfork critic ?
