It was a 35 over ball that replaced the ball in the second innings, it was the one used in the Australia first innings that Labassistant just patted back for two sessions
I honestly don't think Pope has the technique to be a top Test player but they like him so will stick with him. I don't see them switching the positions when everyone's fit but we'll see
The ball isn't changed with one of the same overs used but with one with comparable wear. 4.5 Ball lost or becoming unfit for play If, during play, the ball cannot be found or recovered or the umpires agree that it has become unfit for play through normal use, the umpires shall replace it with a ball which has had wear comparable with that which the previous ball had received before the need for its replacement. When the ball is replaced, the umpire shall inform the batters and the fielding captain If that had been done to Australia's advantage there would be the inevitable calls of cheating.
Just admit Ozzi you lost the match as not good enough, the Rain saved you in 4th test so your lucky to get away with 2-2, best bet for you is to keep your mouth shut
Chill guys. Nothing you say will change the result. Sure, that throw down of Bairstow's wicket was 'not in the interests of cricket'. Sure, the weather at Old Trafford 'conspired' to prevent an English win. Sure, that replacement ball in the last test was 'contentious'. But try using that to alter the final outcome. We've just seen one of the best and tightest series in Ashes history. It was full of controversy and strange decisions from both players and umpires, and ridiculous goings on from people who should know better, BUT it drew the attention of even the most disinterested parties of non-participants (afternoon all). And it gave us something to comment on, wisely or otherwise (mostly otherwise), while we waited for our beloved Rs to start their campaign this season. And while some have given up on us already, I'm choosing to get behind our boys to shock the Championship and play a "Bazzball" style of football attack. Fire at will guys, but STRAIGHT! We won't win everything, but maybe, just maybe, our players will get the job done and we'll show the other teams that we're not going to lie down and take their ****e. After what I've been through in the past two weeks, it's what you do now that decides your future. So let's get behind those who are playing in our colours and leave this Ashes series to the history books. C'mon U RRRs!!!
Nope don't think I will admit that. No test is lost until the last wicket is taken. We've seen that a few times before at Headingly. We lost the last test match - I haven't denied that. As for shutting up, might be good advice for yourself as we retained the ashes and we'll be celebrating for a while yet.
I didn't see any Aussie players celebrating. Understandable really, because they didn't win anything.
Let's all agree that we witnessed an amazingly tight Ashes series. Both teams were evenly matched, when healthy, and a draw was a just result. We retained the Ashes, but the Poms came back from 2 down to force a draw. Luck prevented either side from winning the series - in the form of injuries (Wood until mid-series, Lyon midway into series, both of whom could have swung the series decisively), weather interruptions and a questionable ball change (which remarkably cancelled each other out, although the weather issue was not of an umpiring result). So finally I'd like to say, "Game over man!" Now, let's get on with the real reason for this board, ... the QPR rollercoaster. ALL ABOARD! Oh, and fellas, let's keep our powder dry for use against the salvos heading our way from the opposition supporters.
We've been baited a few times and said nothing. I just happen to like what Ozzie said. When England won the Ashes, l was upfront and congratulated the relevant members. This time around, some here have been brilliant and said likewise ............some didn't and that's their choice. I don't like bad sports, never have, never will. Win, lose or draw, l always try to be respectful, especially to my fellow R'rs.
Mate. They're not going to give up. They'll find any excuse to get a rise out of you. Take it from someone who's had a first hand account. I reckon I may have overreacted considering my fellow R's circumstances (get well soon mate and stay well). So don't lower your standards with petty bickering. We all witnessed the games and their aftermaths. And we know how childish some of us can get. We have nothing to prove. We still have the urn and it's their job it back in Oz. I'm sure we'll have a welcoming reception for them at that time. () Just remember the old adage, 'Winners are grinners and the rest can do as they please.' Sure, we didn't win the series, but we won the right and honour to keep that small container of history for at least another term. So Didley, no point in arguing with those who will not listen. Take the high ground and know in yourself, we came away with no loss and no shame (and yes, that includes the Bairstow runout for reasons I have stated previously) and ...THE ASHES!!! Just an aside here. HB, as well as others, kept referring to the fact that England would have done a lot better if they had Wood and Woakes, to name a couple, fit at the onset of the series. Quite right. But, if Australia had a fit Lyon in the final three tests, then the series would have been done and dusted! Pretty sure our fellow Rs would agree. So, we finish all square. Well played by all involved and good banter, by and large, by the contributors on this board. Now let's get on the same page as we prepare for the main event on the card. The Rs' season. That will surely be more frustrating than the ebb and flow of the now historic Ashes series 2023. To paraphrase a certain well-known Will, “If you prick us, do we not bleed (blue and white, and sometimes red and black)? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you score for us, do we not cheer?" To bloody right we will, Will! C'MON U RRRS!!!
ASHES 2023 England hit with massive, unprecedented 19-point World Test Championship penalty for Ashes over rates please log in to view this image by Wisden Staff August 2, 2023 - 12:30pm England have been hit with a massive, unprecedented World Test Championship points penalty for maintaining a slow over rate in multiple Tests in the 2023 Ashes. England have been docked 19 points, as many as all teams combined in the 2021-23 World Test Championship, and more than the 16 deducted across countries in 2019-21. While the series was a memorable one, going down as one of the most entertaining and closely fought Test rubbers in history, the pace of play was a discussion point throughout. Australia were also penalised, docked 10 points, though only falling short in one Test, at Old Trafford. England were docked two points at Edgbaston, nine at Lord’s, three at Old Trafford, and five at the Kia Oval. Can England take the Ashes 3-2? Can England take the Ashes 3-2? please log in to view this image A new rule, brought in mid-series after lobbying by Australia’s Usman Khawaja, proved pivotal in limiting Australia’s penalty. The thresholds for when a bowling team can be penalised has been raised from a minimum of 60 overs per innings to 80 overs per innings, and from 120 overs per game to 160 overs per game, if the opposition bats twice. England didn’t bat 160 overs in any of the five Tests this summer, but Australia were still liable to be punished at Old Trafford because England only batted once. Under the previous system, Australia could have been liable for penalties at the Kia Oval, Edgbaston and Lord’s, due to England facing between 120 and 160 overs in each of these Tests. However, Khawaja is still not happy that his team received any penalty at all. “Don’t even get the chance to bowl in the second innings at Manchester due to 2 days of rain and ICC still issue fines and take 10 WTC points of us for slow over rates! That makes a lot of sense…” he tweeted. With 12 points for a win and four points for a draw on offer in each WTC Test, England have therefore seen their series haul slashed from 28 points to just nine points, while Australia end with 18 points. Had England been beaten 4-1, but maintained an acceptable over rate throughout, they would have ended with 12 points, three more than their current tally. Both sides have also been hit with heavy fines. Australia have been hit with a 50 per cent match fee fine for the Old Trafford Test, while England have been docked five per cent for every over they were short.
This is pure nuts and makes cricket look foolish..... Simple solution would be to ensure 90 overs are bowled in a day by playing until done so, this time of year it doesn't get dark until gone 9pm and all test grounds have flood lights.... England effectively saved Australia from getting fined by scoring so quickly.....
I was saying the other day that there ought to be in-game penalties for slow over rates, with extras awarded to the batting side.
True...... but has to be an amount that has the desired effect..... say 5 runs for every over short, if only 80 overs bowled then 50 runs is added..... teams would get the message fairly quickly....
Cheating convicts saved by Blighty’s weather.......in fact, they should award the Ashes to whoever was the better side, which was quite obviously those brave English lads over those smug, arrogant Aussies......RULE BRITANNIA !! Only kidding, and fair play to Australia. At least we made a good fight of it and made a lot more people, like myself, rethink the whole point of Test cricket.
