I had one of the free lifetime passes. Really enjoyed going there for a bit. Waltham was a clown as it later transpired. He got Ashbee and Woodhouse involved which was great at first but then he fell out with them and left the club and took some staff with him and it all fell apart. The lifetime passes ended as soon as they got promoted to the NCEL because it turned out to be against the league rules to offer free entry, for some reason. Waltham then started at least two other new clubs playing out of Dene Park, which he owned and had kicked Hull United out of. Those all fell flat and at some point he got involved with Ferriby and made a right old mess of it there as well.
Me and the Mrs went to the Gunton Arms in Norfolk back end of last year. Gets rave reviews and is a regular in The Guardian’s top 100 gastro pubs in the UK. It was ****. Great setting( set in a massive deer park) but even then you couldn’t walk more than 100 metres from the pub before seeing signs saying ‘ No entry, private land’. The food was bang average at best and the supposed renowned chef( he was from Leeds) was an absolute clown. More interested with getting pissed with the customers and mouthing off about being from Leeds than cooking anything half decent. Another reason why Norfolk and Norwich is total dog turd. Don’t get me started on the art at the Gunton, if you’ve been, you’ll know what I’m on about.
So, one over rated restaurant is why Norfolk is ****. No doubt you would call someone saying Hull is **** because a restaurant near Driffield is crap was being somewhat daft. Didn’t go there. Someone in a pub near where we were stopping overheard me and the wife discussing where to go and said they couldn’t help but overhear and advised against bothering. Recommended a couple of cheaper, less pretentious places which we thoroughly enjoyed.
I was in Norfolk at the weekend, I ****ing hate it. I have to go because the in laws live there but if they didn’t I wouldn’t set foot in the place ever again. The people are cold and backward, granted you might find the odd ‘ normal’ person but in general they’re sly, cold and lacking in character. My other half is from there and she hates it more than me. FACT.
The lifetime pass was a stupid idea. It was obvious that people would take them and then not turn up very much meaning an empty ground. You need to put a value on tickets to ensure people will actually turn up. At the moment I know of plenty that have additional £1 a month passes at City for kids in their family who don't actually come. You're better off charging a tenner and offering a free burger and pint on the concourse. People get there early, grab their food and then buy additional stuff. Few people would buy a ticket for a tenner and not turn up. But offer tickets for free or for a quid and people snap them up and change their mind about going.
Not sure on all of them. I pay £30 each for me and the wife, about £5 for my 11 year old daughter and maybe £1 for the lad and his cousin.
They were well supported, but not as well supported as Norwich, where they actually have to pay for their passes. Strange times we live in.
I have to go to the station quite a bit , god the state of the people using and hanging round there and Radisson want a hotel near it ! Classic behaviour Friday , Grandad shouting to his two year old in a buggy ‘ swivel ‘ and the little lad giving the finger !!! While his parents stood laughing - his life’s mapped out already . What do you do ? Part of me wanted to have a word .
Back in Hull today, first time in 3 years. Went straight to the crem to prune my mum's rose. Woman nearby said ' don't do it yourself the gardeners'll chow at yer'. Where else could I be but Hull! Lots of new stuff around Marina, all looks good, new bridge over Castle St looks great though a long walk to get across it! Pint in Minerva now, that never changes.
We were around Marina today. Did you notice the Spurn lighthouse after its refurb? It’s looking rather resplendent. Noticed the area seems disappointingly quiet for a reasonably lunchtime.
Hull is such a unique place I love coming back the majority of people are polite and decent. I always struggle initially as living in London I am used to being a rude **** most of the time and it takes time to adjust.
