Referee Mike Dean will step down from his role as a Premier League VAR official and leave the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the referees' body said on Saturday.

Dean, a colourful figure, began officiating in the Premier League in 2000 and refereed more than 550 matches in the top flight before he became a full-time Video Assistant Referee (VAR) official in 2022.

The 55-year-old often attracted attention for his charismatic style of refereeing, dishing out cards with flair and letting the ball run between his legs during games.

In the extensive highlight reel of his career, Dean will likely be best remembered for a viral video of him celebrating wildly in the stands while watching Tranmere Rovers, the club he has supported since childhood.

I went to Djurgården vs Malmo tonight. Standing allowed, beer in the stand and an amazing none stop singing atmosphere. Good fun

Don’t want any of that here. How many died of smoke inhalation, asthma attacks and being incinerated? How can you discuss xGs, pass completions etc with all that going on?

Couldn't discuss anything too noisy and I wasn't even standing in the Ultras section behind the goal.

Even the flares ae done with class. They are banned from grounds hear but you seem them every game. Once the lads in balaclavas are finished waving them about they come to the front of the stand and drop them on the ground so the fire marshalls and stick them in buckets and use a fire extinguisher on them.

The HCST would have a fit at scenes like that going by the comments, particularly by one person, at the last meeting.<laugh>

Always like asking East Yorkshire ****es which was the last team to win the league or appear in a Cup Final with an Owl as their badge. They look at you as if you are daft and say they don’t know when but it must have been Wednesday. Most Leeds fans actually from Leeds, especially older ones, would know. The superstitious Revie after a period in which Leeds won the League for the first time in their history, won the Fairs Cup twice, the League Cup and got to two FA Cup Finals, the first times in their history, decided an owl was a symbol of bad luck and had the badge changed. Then a year or so later left.<laugh>
