Not sure the Sun are wriggling really. It is only because of them this has been revealed. The BBC, by their own admission, did not even speak to Edwards in the seven weeks after the initial complaint up to the Sun publishing. Not one word. That is the whole crux of the matter. They neglected their duty, as they have done so often in the past, presumably in the hope that it would go away. There may be questions for the Sun. And they will have to answer them. The BBC, for decades gave managed to fudge theirs, or just ignore them.
It’s outrageous that it’s happened again. It all seems to be brushed under the carpet until it makes the national headlines, then all of a sudden the investigations start. As for the mental health card being used. He didn’t need to be detained in hospital for his mental health when he was sending messages to his colleagues and random people on dating sites. The pressure of what he’s been caught out doing might have put him on rock bottom, but it can’t be made to be an excuse for his behaviour. My family, including myself, have a long history of mental health episodes. It’s a kick in the teeth when people like this guy uses it so sparingly to get him out of trouble or to try and make people feel sorry for them.
Making a single phone call and giving up, sending a single email and giving up, is begging for the next stop to be the tabloids these days. Laziness or deliberately ignoring it is the question.
It is the crux of the challenges laid at the door of the BBC. I dont accept it is only the BBC who need to be challenged as a result of this though. The Sun clearly intimated a crime had been committed. I know they are claiming they didnt, but they certainly did. Then they backtracked from it. Allegedly they were even told by the victim the story wasnt true. There simply has to be an investigation into them im my opinion. Once the police decided in a matter of hours there was no criminality, and indeed the police had previously identified no criminality, that Sun headline becomes an issue, as does their subsequent statements about what they did or didnt say or mean. As far as I am concerned both the BBC and The Sun can take their medicine here. Hopefully those directly impacted by this episode get some sense of relief from it.
There's a massive difference between the Sun and the BBC, or supposed to be ... ... one is a muckraking scandal sheet that people don't take seriously unless they're tattooed or lacking. The other is supposed to be the trusted, honest and dependable voice of the nation. They've never been closer imo.
Yes. There is plenty in that, but if the Sun (which by the way I do not read and for which I carry no torch), have committed an offence, they will pay for it as they and other papers have in the past . They are, if you like being themselves and the cost they have to pay, if any, will be borne by them. The BBC though, will likely have no sanction placed on them. There never is. There will be an inquiry, internal as usual, there will be much regret voiced and many assurances given that all lessons have been learned. It has all happened too often before and it will almost certainly happen again. And this time next year, the inquiry will be complete and it will largely be forgotten. The BBC too if you like, are being themselves, but the cost they have to pay, if any, will be borne by us.
We all still need to know what Huw Edwards has actually done and how serious it is. Plod saying nothing to see here? Are some junior BBC snowflakes offended cos big bad presenter was mean to them, or was he a nasty pervert demanding sex a la Weinstein. Did Edwards go onto a dating agency to seduce young women and what did he do, say or pay them? Has he been doing this for years...
The real point is that the BBC did not even speak to Edwards regarding a very serious allegation. They could not of course make it public, but any investigation would start with speaking to the man accused. The BBC have said themselves they did no such thing until the Sun published , and that is unforgiveable complacency. At best.
I found that really, really funny, whilst not agreeing with a word of it. If you're on state tv, and furthermore, are the public face of the vast majority of the royal family coverage (ney time for them personally, but apparently a lot of people do) and also the the public face who delivers the majority of bad news to the country, the least I expect is that you're not, in your private time, paying crack heads tens of thousands to send you dodgy pics. The news coverage yesterday was enough to make you sick. Like we should be feeling compassion for a bloke because he's, to some degree at least, been found out and doesn't like it.
His estranged mother and step dad (he had had no contact with them for 2 years) approached the police in April. No criminality. No further action. His mother and step dad approached the bbc in May, 1 of 250 cases against an employee. We do not know their case. After 7 weeks of no contact they went to the sun. Bbc reviewed and again the police advised no criminality. I'll await the bbc investigation before slagging them off. I'm not expecting to hear anything breaking other than the end of Huw career due to a non criminal case raised by an estranged mother and step dad. Sad times.
Same here tbh. If it's none of our business what BBC presenters do then they should keep their noses out of how we view climate change, conflicts around the world, famine in Syria, war in Ukraine, foreigners, drug addicts, gays, illegal immigrants, LGBT, etc. But they don't. The BBC continually lecture us about how we should be living our lives, looking after the environment, regarding drag queens and raising our children. So please don't have your staff pontificating about values, and human rights, when they can't even be decent with their colleagues or refrain from using their status to coerce vulnerable people into situations they otherwise wouldn't. You're no better than most of us so don't pretend you are, thanks all the same.
Agreed he should have been quizzed about it very early on, no question... However complaints about celebrities are nothing new, there is probably whole department tasked with dealing with the, usually nutters,,, but like stalkers..etc. The parents are being offered a large some of money for their interview now! Nothing in this is good. There has been big NATO meeting about the War in Ukraine. Climate change is beginning to hit home.. Bonko is lying about passing info to the Covid Cttee wtf are we talking about... well i am not sure atm,,are you?
