    3.50 Southwell

    Circus Polka 66/1

This is either going to run an absolute shocker or a great race but Circus Polka looks incredibly overpriced to me. This lightly raced 7 year old, trained by Owen Brennan who I don't know too much about, has had 4 runs this year since September. These 4 runs came on the back of a 3 1/2 year break, no idea if it was injury, and I think its fair to say that he will have needed these runs to get him race fit. Circus Polka was a fair performer in his youth, winning his first 2 outings, including his only run at Southwell on fibresand which is an obvious bonus. In his earlier days Circus Polka was a 70 rated performer and although at 7 he will probably be unable to repeat these exploits, he won't have to today as he is now rated 45.

After his first two reappearance runs after a lengthy absence, I think Circus Polka ran a very encouraging race at Wolves over 9f as he finished 3L behind the winner Bennelong who has subsequently won again since off a 2lb higher mark, at least showing the form has some credibility. That day Circus Polka was racing from 6lb out and Julie Burke's 5lb claim meant he was effectively racing off a mark of 46 and although not an amazing run it certainly showed to me that he still retained a modicum of ability.

As I said earlier, I don't know much about trainer Owen Brennan but he's had 2 winners in his career to date, the latest coming in Beverley. Although its obviously not the most encouraging thing in the world, I certainly think his price tag negates this factor. Another positive to me is that this is the first time an apprentice has not been riding since Brennan has trained him with Russ Kennemore getting the leg up today. Further to this, he is very unexposed at this distance of 1m4f with his last start (and only turf start) being his first attempt at this distance and hopefully this can bring about a bit of improvement. He's well drawn in stall 3 and clearly acts on the surface and in this really poor Class 6 event and off a mark of 45 he is right at the bottom of the handicap and he races here of 8-10. He's not one to be investing a lot of faith in but he's too overpriced for me and hopefully he can at least make the frame at very nice odds.

Hello All , not been on for a while as too busy in the office and the buggars blocked the site now !! Hope all r well. Nice to see one of my old favs Twice Over may stay in training as a 7 year old to back up Frankel for Sir Henry next year. I fancy MORENITO in the 3.10 at Fakenham 6/4 with 365 at the moment.

Just been reading a short interview with Sir Henry on Sporting Life - looks like Frankel will start with the Lockinge next season and then off to Sandown for the Eclipse. I guess later plans will be on hold until they see how well he gets the 10f
