I would have thought that £20 mill for JWP was a good deal for Saints. We could have got double that two seasons ago but I just think that Saints fans have seen the besy of him. One his performances over the alst two seasons, I would be disappointed if I was a WHU fan and had forked out £40 million for him. Just feel that we have to get the deal done as his evaluation will go down even more if he has another poor season. Time to say "thanks" and wish him well with the next club ?
20mill is not good value for him. He's got several years left on his contract and is our captain. And his free kick ability adds value.
The way he left the field on the last day of the season made it feel like a deal was practically done somewhere, but I’m hearing indirectly that it’s looking like he may well start the season with us unless someone suddenly comes forward with a serious offer. Apparently JWP is one of a few players who didn’t have a wage reduction in their contract and he doesn’t want to move away from his Winchester home, which pretty much makes it London or the south Fulham have put themselves out of the running due to wages, presumably Brentford & Bournemouth would be similar. Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs have better players which leaves West Ham & Brighton. If reports are to be believed then West Ham seem a long way off our valuation. With his wage levels safe and his known professionalism and unwillingness to unroot his family, I can’t see him kicking up a stink if a team like West Ham don’t meet our asking price.
I think he has at least three years left on £5m a year so we would have to pay that up out of that derisory transfer fee £40m or go away unless JWP waives his contract by putting in a transfer request
If we sell a player we don’t also pay out his contract. If he signs for another team his contract is null and void, he is off the books. If we cancel his contract and he walks away as a free agent, then we pay out his contract.
What you are referring to is a “loyalty bonus”, which is a bonus paid over the length of a contract and is negated by a transfer request. They are usually only a fraction of a player’s contact and salary.
Same. Gone very strong though, so will be an interesting test of credibility. A free agent meeting with Southampton is an odd thing to make up. (Not to rule it out!)
