Sounds as if she calls out stupidity all across the political spectrum. Although with the Cons atm that isn't hard.

He employs his wife as his secretary, nothing wrong with that under the rules as they were then. MP’s are not allowed to employ family members under current rules, but are allowed to retain them if they were already employed before the rule change.

What is obscene is the 200% pay rise she has received since the rules were changed, talk about feathering your own nest. She gets £45k a year of tax payers money

Yep. Them's the rules unfortunately, and they'll never be changed under anyone. I expect she'll be broadly in line with other MPs assistants - word gets around about money.

Trying to link MPs pay and military pay (I went through that pay freeze) is a bit futile.

They have been changed, just not retrospectively

Sorry my mistake I thought all MPs salaries were the same, either in power or opposition?

Maybe I should have said 'in a way that will cost any of the current lot anything'.

Yeah, just looked it up, any MP elected after 2017 can't employ their spouse or other family members.

When your government's spokesman is being tied up in knots by Carol Vorderman you're in trouble.

This is where Boris Johnson was clever, he'd never debate directly with anyone, just bluster and change the subject then say something ridiculous and laugh hysterically at how witty he was.

He actually sat there in one interview muttering the words "obfuscate, obfuscate"under his breath. If it wasn't so tragic what he did whilst in office it would be quite funny :emoticon-0102-bigsm

I'm sure he's realised, as Boris did, that wanting the job and actually doing the job are two different things. He can choose now between being a massive loser at the GE or forcing another Tory mutiny and be 'hounded out' as Johnson now claims.

It looks like he's after a mutiny tbh.

I would flush him down the bog right now.
Yes l realise it would be a waste of water. At least if he was question about sewage in our water, he would have first hand knowledge.

Rishi stopping the boats again I see ...

... I wonder how the other four promises are going <doh>

"Nearly 700 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in the highest number on a single day so far this year, new figures show.

Some 686 people were detected on Friday, according to Home Office figures published on Saturday, passing this year’s previous high of 549 recorded on Sunday June 11."

The running total, for the year, is slightly less than last year but the boats aren't stopping ...

... this whole situation is out of control.

20230708_191042.jpg Could it possibly be the case that for a lot of these migrants English is not their first language? :emoticon-0102-bigsm

I have been doing a bit of reading about migration in Africa. It seems really grim.

Migrants there are victims of climate change. In many ways the West is the architect of climate change. People who live their rural herding life are having to mive closer to cities to scratch an existence. At times met with hostility.

It seems like there there is a lack of human compassion outside of Europe. It makes me sad. Human beings with nowt, turned away by countries like ours. We need to be much better. This isnt a political thing. Both main parties are in a race to stop more coming and deport more that get here. Our politics is broken, when neither party has any compassion. Our country, historically, has been such an open and welcoming people. What is wrong with us now. I dont want to be part of a society that picks and chooses who to extend the hand of friendship to. I want to be global exemplar of an open arms approach. I know there are challenges, but let us meet them head on instead of hiding behind illegalities and quotas. We have the wherewithal, if we want to show it, imo anyway.

    Some very good points made.
Climate change, can and is resulting in crops not growing and livestock having nothing to feed on. So naturally people migrate. Plus many countries are dirt poor and especially the young (men) with no prospects will want to move.
Then of course wars, some to do with the Big Powers playing the 'Great Game' others to do with local difficulties, tribes and religions.

No country alone can work this out, who is going to stop wars, reverse the emissions of fossil fuels and promote other nations economies to become prosperous????

Plus this country like many others needs migrate labour to function.

At the moment the slogan is Stop the boats, is a political farce.. fcuking Rwanda... you could not make it up.

Brilliant post mate. We have to keep the borders safe I get that but it’s reached irrational hysteria. If a family need help you help. We are humans. We help less than most right now. As someone said the other day you wouldn’t risk dying on a boat if suffering wasn’t greater elsewhere. If we can intervene over oil and money we can work with the UN to create better conditions. The UN think we’re law breaking extremists and to be fair some did elect just that.
