The Empire Cinemas chain has entered administration, leading to the loss of 150 jobs and the closure of six cinemas.

Eight of the 14 cinemas in the group - under the Empire Cinemas and Tivoli brands - will remain open.

But the locations that have been closed with immediate effect are:

    • Bishop's Stortford
    • Catterick Garrison
    • Sunderland
    • Swindon
    • Walthamstow
    • Wigan

Sites to remain open are located in:
    • Birmingham
    • Clydebank
    • High Wycombe
    • Ipswich
    • Sutton
    • Bath
    • Cheltenham

The administrators say they are seeking a buyer.

The financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and the cost of living crisis have been blamed for the closures.

Was only there on Monday to watch the new Indiana Jones and you could see it was only a matter of time, it was almost completely empty.

It's actually a decent cinema but people can't afford it these days and everything is overpriced once you get in.

Can't see how cinemas can survive for much longer , certainly in Cities like ours

Are you sure it wasn't ghost town because of the new Indiana Jones film mate?,Jokes aside, the bustling cinema experience has been a rip off for a while, long before covid and cost of living. Was never a "Cheap" experience.

Perfect storm. COVID, cost of living, and the poor standard of Hollywood these days.

I saw it last weekend at the Vue in Gateshead. Less than £10 for two adults so good value. How much was Empire charging?

£7.99 each which i thought was a bit steep, especially as my dad is retired (no difference in cost though)

Could make a difference to people whether or not they go. Shame because I think there are some cracking films to be seen. Thoroughly enjoyed Indiana Jones and will be back first opportunity to see Oppenheimer.

Nice little picture house is the view. Went there last year and found it reasonable.

I'm looking forward to Oppenheimer. I'm hoping Cillian Murphy nails the "I have become death, destroyer of worlds" quote in his best Tommy Shelby accent.

Aye the plan was to go back and watch Oppenheimer when it’s released, ah well will need to find another place. Not been to Boldon for a while I guess!

Rest is History did a fascinating two episode pod on Oppenheimer. Undoubtedly a genius but a bit of an oddball and not a particularly nice person (at least in his youth). They look at the origins of his "destroyer of worlds" quote too.

Vue seems to be the cheapest big cinema these days. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays you can get 2-1 too so it only costs £5 for two.

I have a local independent cinema 5 minutes away that charges £3.50 an adult which is brilliant.

The likes of Odeon, Cineworld, Empire, have priced themselves out, and then probably couldn’t afford to cut prices due to the problems stated above such as covid etc.

Rest is history, name of the pod cast mate? I'll have some of that. They tend to do that in film adaptations, make arseholes likeable otherwise they can sell tickets. Having Cillian Murphy play him tells me that they are going down the sympathetic approach, it'll be all "do it for your country", Arm up the back type stuff. Its like the Greatest Showman film, good film, however PT Barnum in reality was an absolute tosser that exploited people. Gangs of New York, although a small part, portrayed him as said above a tosser. hobnobbing it with the corrupt etc
