    From today's Chronicle:

Fabricio Coloccini’s contract talks with Newcastle United remain “work in progress” with the skipper keen to nail his colours to the mast at St James’ Park.

The Chronicle understands that Coloccini may even wait until the end of the season before opting to sign a deal that could see him end his career on Tyneside.

Coloccini has two years of his current contract left to run, but has made it clear he is happy with life at high-flying Newcastle.

It is also believed that one of the reasons Coloccini is paying careful detail to the finer points of his demands is due to the fact the South American funds an orphanage in Argentina for 160 children.

Coloccini is also not asking for higher wages, with the length of the deal to be finalised, although La Liga outfit Seville have been tracking the Argentine in the last 12 months and he has also been linked with Liverpool in recent weeks, with talk played down by United.

Coloccini has no problems with anybody at United and the scenario is very different to that of his former team-mate Jose Enrique, who proved to be a difficult customer towards the end of his four-year stay with the Magpies. Back then Enrique used the social networking site Twitter to air his grievances with the club before quitting St James’ for Liverpool, with the Spaniard currently lying in sixth place with the Kop side.

However, Coloccini is keen to stay focused on the job in hand, and a source close to the defender told the Chronicle: “Fabricio is happy at Newcastle.

“The next contract is going to be an important one for him and his family.

“But he is happy to just stay firmly focused on playing football at the moment.”

    “It’s all work in progress.”

Coloccini signed for the Magpies in 2008 from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna and cost Newcastle £10m.

The centre-back endured a tough start to his United career and suffered relegation in his first season.

But he stayed loyal with Newcastle during their short stay in the Championship and has gone from strength to strength in the last two seasons to be become one of the club’s most valued players.

Didnt know the bit in bold! What a guy. But it seems as though this might drag out until summer, despite both parties wanting him to stay.

Always get a bit worried when stuff like this drags on. Apparently both parties wanted Barton to stay and contract extensions were just dragging on. The whole truth didn't come out until later on.

    Still think he'll stay though!

"....due to the fact the South American funds an orphanage in Argentina for 160 children."

Makes you wonder if we were the first supporters to let him shag our wives <whistle>

I feel sorry for anyone who has to negotiate with the Chuckle Brothers.

On the plus side its not as if its expiring anytime soon anyway, and he doesn't strike me as the type to force a move Barton style.

    Also, what a guy!

Edit: had not seen the above post before posting the above... What a guy.

  7. I love Coloccini, but If he pulls a Jose, stalls on contract talks until summer and then ****s off a week before the start of the season I'll ****ing hate him, regardless of what he's done for us so far.

I personally have faith in Colo staying, but if he's even thinking about leaving, then he should tell us sooner rather than later, so we can start thinking about a possible replacement.

If Jose had told us early on that he wanted to leave, then at least I would have respected the fact that he had the balls to come out and say it, and because we could have planned a replacement earlier on. He was a gutless Spanish prick who was too afraid to give us a straight answer.

I'm not angry at Colo at all, I'm not upset, but I just really get annoyed when people do what Jose did, and I hope Colo doesn't do the same thing. I love Colo but if he's even thinking about leaving, I'd still respect him if he told us now, so we'd have more time to think about who will replace him.

    <laugh> witty as ever OT.

In all seriousness i'm sure Colo will sign an extension, I wouldn't compare it to the Barton or Nolans saga's.

Every player in the squad 'could' still leave this summer but I'm not going to lose sleep over it from November.

True. Shola is contractually obliged to stay forever and will be buried in a golden casket at a 45 degree angle in the Gallowgate.

Only if he stoops to Barton-esque levels of unprofessionalism, which I can't picture from a seasoned international and former Champions League player. It's nothing to worry about with 18 months to run.

I'd be more worried if I was an Arsenal fan, van Persies stalling til summer when his contract runs out...

Surely he should wait until he's made a decision?

Don't want more negative press unless it's concrete, "Toon Star Wants Out" etc

Would be kinda pissed off if he came out in November and said he wanted to leave. Would possibly ruin the good run and team spirit we have going on.

And any transfer fee. This is the randomest hypothetical ever though, he's club captain with two seasons to run and we're third in the league.
