It was losing possession further up the pitch and getting done far more regularly than when we play out from the back and occasionally lose possession - where space is tight anyway and we get away with it more when we do. How often did we lose it on the edge of the oppps box then 3 passes later it's in out own net? Seemed like twice or 3 times a game under Shota towards the end of his tenure.
are you saying it's the keepers fault and not Liam telling him what to do? Ingram was the cause of the suicide goals last season when Liam was brought in Ingram then realised that even though he's following instructions he will still get blamed by Liam so he did what he needed to do
Liam can't make decisions for players once they're on the pitch. Couple of times he was indicating it needed to go long in that first half. Would be harsh to say 'fault' considering the kid is learning his game it just is what it is, and I'd be surprised if he's one of our main 2 keepers in the coming season.
I'm not sure he did. Liam was saying last season we need to find the space when everyone's marked up and the press has been drawn. Tim LT was looking for only the short balls and they just got shorter and shorter the more the defenders and midfield got pressed. I'll think if you watch the game back he was telling Lo T where the space was so you've got that the wrong way round.
Okay, so you are fine with playing out from the back but not doing it badly. Good job we have a decent league record doing it well enough then.
In drawing the press we play suicide balls it's much better to pass to players on the wing or into space further up the pitch if everybody is marked
why should anybody want to do anything badly? it's just illogical managers should employ tactics that the players can implement not because they have seen the Premier League champions employ them
so why do we pass to marked players 20 yards out right in front of the centre of the goal? we did it last season and we've started again we only changed when Liam realised it was ridiculous or the players ignored him
Liam coming out after games saying it only works when there's space and we need to mix it up if its not on suggests to me some players weren't as switched on in their first friendly after the break than they were when playing competitive football twice a week in the season. That's the point of pre season.
Pep has said publicly Man City can’t play a certain way when Kyle Walker is on the pitch however Liam thinks we can try replicate the Man City way with players like Docherty
agreed. we need two good keepers and we need to pay them both enough to have one on the bench that's why I would still go for Darlow goalkeeper is the most important position even more so than striker or centre midfield
That's a chicken and egg argument though isn't it? We clearly do have the players to implement it though as we conceded very few championship goals by doing so. Fewer in fact than when we weren't drawing the press and playing out. And as easily demonstrated you don't have to be premier league champions to play that way and be successful. Smaller prem clubs have adopted that style and improved also.
