10 years ago isn’t now though. Because of the mortgage situation now it’s gone through the roof for rented accommodation. Even my mate who rents a house out because he moved i with his lass has had to crank up the rent to a rate he feels uncomfortable charging because his mortgage costs went up so high. I’ve also been there and probably have a higher mortgage than I’d have hoped because of the need to be where my kids home is and have enough beds. I’m worried about it, I will have to adjust hugely though I can’t do holidays anyway so not that much to knock off spend wise. The fact is if Truss and Kwarteng hadn’t made such a balls up it wouldn’t be half as bad. That was the trigger. Why can’t you see that ?
And what about young people ? Should they always be tied to renting ?

It’s him sneering at folk, he can do whatever he wants i honestly don’t care about him (that’s an understatement) but don’t sneer at people less fortunate than he clearly is

Interest rates go up and down, inflation goes up and down (if I read the New York Times correctly its a 114% in Argentina), it doesn't matter who caused it, its just something we all have to live with. Things will change, as they have over the course of most of our lifetimes. We can't constantly go around blaming other people.

I believe it’s because you don’t like him that you think he’s sneering. I remember my mam and dad saying exactly the same to me as what you think now. You will never be able to afford a house I don’t know what you are going to do. When our lad bought his he was gobsmacked when he heard the mortgage rate was going up to 6% I told him mine went over 10% so yours is still peanuts.<laugh>

Wow. I wonder if some people on here have ever been poor. People close to the edge can’t just roll with the punches. They get wiped out. You might have some financial resilience to deal with fluctuations. Others really don’t. Are they not worthy of protection? I’ll be honest I’ve been on my arse - no house twice and tgat Affects your progress. I’ve got myself into a nice house in a nice place but haven’t been dealt easy cards, so I’m not going to forget those where I was and I deal with them most days

You make the assumption that anyone who doesn't agree with you has never faced adversity of any kind. You're wrong in making that assumption. And some of the people who don't agree with you might do so precisely because they have faced adversity.
At what point have I said that people in trouble shouldn't be protected? I haven't. I am a firm believer in social security. But to make that work, people also have to take responsibility for themselves in whatever way they can.
You should accept that people have different opinions and stop telling people they are bad people because they don't have the same ideas as you.

Being honest I don’t think you are a bad person but I do think you don’t get where some people are at and I think your ‘pull up your bootstraps’ be sensible approach doesn’t apply for people who through trauma or mental illness or even cognitive difficulties can’t always be perfect. They need support and a cushion. Support services have been removed to a huge extent and the cushion has gone. Safety and stability first then people grow. I don’t think you’re obnoxious but I don’t agree with you, I do think the Tories are evil and I do think there are a couple on here who are obnoxious people.

We haven't reached the 15% interest rates yet, but we have before.

You're making assumptions again that I don't have any experience of these things. I agree, there will always be people in society who need extra help. A caring society supports those people. But that's splitting hairs, and it's not unreasonable to expect the majority of the population to take responsibility for themselves as much as they possibly can. That's how a functioning society works.

I’d argue that some people taking too much care of themselves and not enough of others is where it’s all gone wrong.

Are you for real, you do realise that the majority on here have like myself being dragged up in a pit village with absolutely nothing but through my parents upbringing learned to do without if you can’t afford it,even now I have nowt and working in to my sixties with no public sector pension to look forward to but there you go that’s life…. And another thing that I was taught was respect people who don’t have the same opinion as yourself and not everyone is a horrible **** if you don’t agree with them

To some extent I would agree with you. I think society has become extremely selfish recently. I think we would probably differ in that I would apply that across the board and not just to certain sectors of society.

I don’t really know how to reply to ‘I don’t think you get it ‘ I don’t believe there will be many people who will have started from where I did.

So what about people who imply we’re ‘jealous’ of the rich because we want things to be fairer. Is that what comes from understanding struggle ?

So how can you not understand that a hike in interest rates will make kids suffer - and i don’t mean just this trying to have a home, I mean disposable income that stops a parent paying for everyday things. People are suffering already man.

You seem to read things that I can’t see, where have I wrote anything that says I don’t understand that high interest rates make people suffer. My house went over 10% and the interest rates went up over 15% so I suffered, the difference between us is I didn’t blame everyone else and expect them to pay for it, I just did with out.

But mate how can you do without if you’ve got nowt. Things are bad right now. Don’t you see that it’s kids who do without not you. Why should some people live like kings - Sunak in his heated pool with his costal holiday home - while others can’t afford the bus to the swimming baths. I can’t share it yet but some research at work where 40% of kids are worried about their parents income and 30% with mental health difficulties and not having enough money is the biggest reason for not doing physical activity. It’s wrong.
