I do think there’s a bit of fairness over there being a gap in service so as not to gift the opposition but equally a person should be able to leave for somewhere better and there’s such a fine line between civil service and policy making in a party that it’s inevitable there is movement between one and another. I think people leave parties to join the government as advisers didn’t Frank Field and Alan Milburn? A lot of politics happens in 6 months if you think about it. Being honest this is because they still can’t accept their hero has been caught out when it’s as clear as day. Trying to black mark her findings like they did with Harman.

Ha’way Rishi son, get them promises fettled <laugh>

"Crossings by people seeking asylum have set a new record for the month of June, pushing the total for the year so far to more than 11,000. In the first six months of 2023, 11,434 people were detected making the journey from France, according to provisional government figures.

This includes 155 people arriving in three boats on Friday, taking the total for June alone to 3,824. This is the highest total for the month of June since records began."

Maybe they should sail boats near the French coast with their new expensive advertising billboards for sails. That would show um huh?

What's the total year comparison with this point in 2022?

Hint - it's down 9% according to Migration Watch UK.

Pah, facts are for suckers. It's like those £billion schemes to get the the unemployed into work. The "facts" have shown that they are actually "worse than doing nothing" according to the public accounts committee who oversee where taxpayers money goes, but still they persist with them. It's almost as if there was an ulterior motive for them... such as lining the pockets of the private companies who are "providers" of the smoke and mirror snake oil miracle cures :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Fewer boats, fewer people. But facts are for suckers, obviously.

What the government actually has to do with those numbers, who knows. You'd have to look at channel weather for the year, how many the French are now stopping (and how many they're waving through) etc. before attributing any credit.

Too much nuance and information for some though. Too much to think about when all you can think about is Evil Tories. Information is the enemy of ideology. Hello boys.

From the PM who asked a man at a homeless shelter,
    "Are you in business" ...

... here's another classic display of 'totally out of touch with the electorate' <laugh>

I can't wait to see him on the doorstep durj g the GE campaign.

"The Prime Minister has donated a £10 bottle of wine to a school in his constituency working hard to raise funds to buy computers - despite a month ago handing over millions of dollars to a US college.

Rishi Sunak - the richest Prime Minister in history - chose the cheapest bottle of merlot and signed it for Leyburn Primary School in Richmond, North Yorkshire."

'Yes, I was giving these children a lesson on fiscal responsibility' <doh>

Why on earth would Sunak pronounce he'll 'stop the boats' when they've failed to even come close in all these years. Minor fluctuations, or reductions, are reported as if we should all be very pleased and proud ...

... but the fact that June saw almost 4000 people arrive, more if you count those not picked up, is absolutely shameful.

I'm afraid Mr Sunak will fail with one of his five key promises ...

... he' may as well change the slogan to 'stop the votes' <laugh>

"This is the highest total for the month of June since records began."

It's to placate people who are worried about immigration. They don't actually want to stop immigration- almost all balanced reports identify it as a good thing- but they need to make people think they're doing something because so many people get weird about it.

You can't stop the boats. Most are RHIBs or dinghies. Time it right and they can be launched and landed pretty much without detection. I can only imagine that they're hoping that people will find another method or will be put off by the dangerous nature of crossing that way so that, eventually, they can say "we stopped the boats".

Because a focus group will have said being mean to migrants is a vote winner. Valueless politics.

I can't disagree with a word of this tbh, you're spot on at first glance. In my opinion they've backed themselves into a corner with one of the big Brexit promises.

"We'll take control of our borders!"

If they had any courage they'd tell people they can't stop the boats and that immigration needs to be handled better ...

... but they daren't come out and say it.

I believe we should offer to take genuine asylum seekers, with skills or qualifications, and ask them to apply from their own country. That would slow things down greatly imo especially if successful applicants could simply jump on a flight.
(Complimentary drinks and a snack if you're suitable for the NHS :) )

Patel, Braverman, Sunak, etc, keep claiming they pay smugglers around £10,000 so why not offer the same deal. That would cripple the gangs and bring in a Labour force we can use. It would also pose a question to those who support migrant's rights.

"Why would genuine asylum seekers choose traffickers, weeks in a lorry then dicing with death in the Channel?"

The ten grand, per person, would also help a canny bit with the admin charges <laugh>

"Migrants attempting to reach the UK are paying smuggling gangs as much as £13,500 to arrange their journey, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has revealed.12 Apr 2016"

I think you're right, they do need to be honest about not being able to stop the boats. And they do need to handle immigration better.

Immigration is a difficult subject, I feel. In the modern world, its just part of the way of things and it can't be stopped. It's pretty clear that immigration is a positive thing, in general. It's also clear that net migration probably needs to be kept to a certain level due to pressure on resources (although migration should also supply some of those resources). Its also something that frightens a lot of people and while many of those fears are unfounded it doesn't stop people being concerned. Also, having lived in an area where different ethnic groups weren't very well mixed, during a problematic period, I can understand how tensions can occur between people of different backgrounds.

So, on that basis, I can see why the government might want to be seen to be doing something about immigration while not doing anything about it. But something has to be done to stop people taking dangerous options to get to this country. Your solution might be as good as any! Of the however many people that arrived via small boat last year, only about 21 (I think) were refused entry, so most of them must be acceptable to the immigration authorities. The rest of it is even more difficult to solve and I'm glad it's not my problem.

For me Brexit was delivered on the back of tensions over immigration and that's a huge regret. We weren't grown up enough to have a serious debate about it, as soon as concerns were raised about immigration those voicing concerns were branded racists.

I include myself in being in the wrong there too, as I say a big regret.

Surely asking people to apply in their own country would kill a few birds with one stone.

For a start it would keep people where they are and gather details. If they're refused, and come here, it's clearly illegal.

It would also allow us to process them when they're not sitting in hotels we're paying for.
