Aye its an interesting change in the game that isn't it. My dad used to take me to New Ferens Park as a lad and we saw some big names turning out for various ressies sides, including Gazza for Everton.

The FA wanted to put more of a focus onto youth football, hence the change to the more European U23 then U21 system. In some regards we've seen huge progress in youth development in this country but you could argue we've lost the competitive ressies games and a lot of young lads get stuck in playing U21 football. Loans seem to be the way forward for clubs, or selling off talent with a view to inserting a buy back clause.

I don't think theres any substitute for senior mens footy like, we need to be trying to get lads sent to the likes of Carlisle this season which would be excellent experience for them.

He’s stood next to Ballard a few times in the pre-season video and looks nowhere near the size of him.

    Re the loans - Burnley’s loanees last season were;

Beyer, Maatsen, Harwood-Bellis, Tella and Obafemi.

Four of those started pretty much every game and were crucial to them going up. We all saw the impact Diallo had, why would you NOT want players like that in the team?

Agree with much of what you say,but I'm a bit more anti than you....I would suggest that if we were unable to bring in an Amad for example as you say,it might encourage us even more to develop our own players. In my opinion, loans should be restricted to the times when, through injury, you just aren't able to put out a decent side...eg a goalie. A properly constructed reserve league would give players the competitive match experiences the loan system is currently seen to provide, whilst keeping the "loanee" players at their parent club and under its' influences, aims, culture, stability and particularly the dressing room.

Am I being dim here? I don’t think there’s anything in this but usually this sort of tweet (I think he is/was an InsideFootball ‘journo’) have our fans in a flap. I’ve seen no mention of it though - I got it from the Stoke forum.

I get what you are saying but i dont think we'll ever see a competitive reserve league any more. 2 of my favourite ever sunderland players were loans - Amad and jonny evans.

I also think the loan market can be used in our favour to develop our own talent. Players need to be playing senior football with pressure on the games and we dont see that in the u21 league - also every team pretty much plays the same way in that league

The loan market in the championship can make or break a teams season, folk might not like that but if we dont use the loan market to bring in real talent then others will n we might get left behind

Me too. I’ve updated my post (I found it a struggle enough just to embed the tweet), just to say that I’m confused as to why we as a fanbase don’t seem to have picked it up. We’re usually all over this sort of rumour (not necessarily in a good way).

Unfortunately the reserve leagues have had their day. You don’t gain much from playing reserve football it’s not competitive, whereas loans to lower leagues are.

Pretty much all of Europe have “B” teams playing in the football pyramid. Bayern Munichs reserves won the 3 Liga a few seasons ago and couldn’t even be promoted. As long as stay away from that and don’t have City’s EDS competing in the football league I’ll be happy.

It's an interesting debate. Carlisle,to use your example, have an excellent coach, but a properly constructed, competitive reserve league would give the same match time experience, where a young lad needing time on the pitch would be playing against much of the type of player he would face if at Carlisle, whilst still being coached by our own people, also excellent.

It’ll be a load of **** but Elon has just changed twitter so those who aren’t logged in can no longer even view a tweet or account. As long as I have a hole in my arse we aren’t wasting £2m on that knacker. He scored 3 goals last season and 2 of them were against us.

I did say a properly constructed, competitive reserve league.....ok, a B team league....and there's no reason why it wouldn't be as competitive as English lower leagues 1 and 2.

Problem is theres nothing really riding on reserve/B team games. I watch a lot of the youth leagues in England and the quality is really good and they are competitive games but every game is the same - they all just play out from the back. For certain positions thats fine but for defenders or GKs they have to go on loan to lower league teams to get used to different playing styles

I think teams should be restricted with hiw many players they can loan out though as this will hopefully stop the top teams hording the talent

To be honest, with the standard of journalism now (spelling, grammar, lack of proof reading), that typo was about the one thing that made me think it may be legit. ;)
