It is insane to think that we were paying De Gea £20m every year in salary for the last four years. This is essentially the problem. When you pay a single player that much money, especially a goal keeper, it only serves to destabilize the squad and future negotiating power.

Age is not the issue. I don’t think anyone could argue that Chelsea had more from Mata than Utd ever did. His peak was at chelsea. Mount could give Utd more than he ever gave his previous club.

    <laugh> of course it is.

Mata, at 26, wasn't past it (his best, peak, whatever) when he came to United.

    He was at his peak.

Mismanaged, like pretty much every decent player that came through the door, by a succcession of piss poor, spoofer over the hill idiot 'managers', and the owners who employed them.

Pushed aside by the employment of big name 'star' players on bloated contracts by a clueless CEO.

I remember the first game Mata played immediately improved our midfield creativity 10 fold from Moyes usual "give it to Young and Januzai to cross it into no one 100 times each game."

Mata and Herrera were wasted at United unfortunately.

We’ve had great players in these last ten years. We just never aligned with the right system, managers, executive leadership, etc. The shtshow turned every half decent player mediocre while the more expensive ones turned into egomaniacs. We’ve effectively been imploding.

I’ve said many times post Fergie that we’ve acquired the reverse Midas touch. Every golden player or even manager turned to lead or rusted iron once they joined Utd.

And all the findings about Utd overpaying for players, enticing them to come here with higher wages doesn’t surprise me at all.

The days when ****ing overpaid overpriced players thought they were honouring the club and the fans with their presence.

Reports going round some of our board have flown out to seal a quick deal for Tchouaméni from Real Madrid for £69m.

He's quality tbf. I'll believe it if it happens but if we're going for him I'll be happy.

I can't believe we'd be signing him if we didn't have the funds to sign a CF as well so maybe previous budget rumours aren't accurate.

I see the plan - we don't need a striker anymore because we have decided to play eight in midfield. WTF

I doubt there's any truth to it. I only paid attention bcos we've apparently had officials fly out to RM. But it's probably all bollox.

So, second bid turned down for Rasmus Hojlund. Is this really what we need?

Possibly not, but care to provide the solution, as this is how the transfer market works?

We make a bid, it's declined, until an agreement can be reached.

Or do we just pay whatever daft sum the selling club asks?

Like the £100million plus Levy wants for Kane. Do we just say **** it, ok then? You (and plenty others) would then moan at overpaying!

United do not currently have that money. We're not City, who can set a transfer fee and then give them double as a back hander.

I'm not convinced we've made any bid yet. Haven't seen a credible source saying so. I don't go by what the tabloids report as most of that's just clickbait bollox.

The two best are Fabrizio and Ormstein and they've said owt about it.

Your post contradicts the point that you think you’re actually making on cost basis. Allegedly, Atalanta is holding out for £50m in total cost. Is that really how a broke club spends money? A player that literally just had one season under his belt and ten goals. How the fk is he any better than any of the younger kids that we have? This is my point! It isn’t about moaning.

If you’re going to spend that much money, at least spend it on established players. Nothing against the kid, I just think any sign of a deal should be no more than £25-30m.

Again, this is obviously theoretical as we don’t know for sure if there has been any bids.

We could be offering staged payments up to the total fee - FIFA have agreed that transfer fees can be paid over a maximum of five years, regardless of the length of the players contract (this in response the the Chavs playing fast and loose with FFP). we could offer £10m now and the balance in full once the sale (or no sale) is resolved. If we offer the same deferred terms for other players we can afford several signings. Don't imagine for a minute that whoever manages to prise Kane from Spurs will be paying his full fee in one lump, the market doesn't work like that.
