Galatasaray translates directly as "Galata Palace" (saray means "palace" in Persian and Galatai meaning the "Galatians").

Galatasaray SK was founded in October 1905 (the exact day is disputed, but is traditionally accepted as "17 Teşrinievvel 1321" according to the Islamic Rumi calendar, which corresponds to 30 October 1905 (according to the Gregorian calendar) by Ali Sami Yen and other students of Galatasaray High School.

Galatasaray High School, who originally established in the area on the European side of Istanbul in 1481, was the progenitor of Galatasaray S.K.

In 2000, they became the first Turkish club to win both the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in the same year.

Turkish people also call it "Cim Bom" which is pretty much an ovation, like hoorah and started after an early tour to Switzerland, when the soccer-playing pupils of Galatasaray High School brought a Swiss football song, Jim Bom Bom, back with them. The song has stayed with them down the years, and is also the inspiration for the club's nickname - Cim Bom Bom.

Their mascot is a lion. The former Turk Telecom Stadium, now the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi, NEF Stadyumu is also known as Aslantepe; Lion Hill.

When players take to the field for Galatasaray game, they have to go through an elaborate introductory process with the fans. The supporters chant the name of each player, followed by "buraya", which means "come here!". The player, who is always known by his first name, then runs across to the fans, punches the air three times and blows a kiss to the stands.

Flags, smoke bombs and flares are accepted as normal at games in the "Lions' Den", while guns are often fired in a celebratory manner. Team buses are frequently attacked and it is not unknown for fans to even try to beat up their own players after a particularly poor display.

Football was first played in Istanbul by British footballers on a field known as Papazın Çayırı (meaning "Priest's Field") in a place that is now the site of Fenerbahce's Sukru Saracoğlu Stadium.

At first, the colors of the Galatasaray Sports Club were red and white, which are the colors in the Turkish flag. However, the Turkish Republic was not founded at that time. Therefore, this inspiration caused repressive administration of the day feel uncomfortable and the administration hounded the footballers. For this reason, the colors were changed to yellow and dark blue till 1907. In 1908, new colors were chosen as red and yellow. Ali Sami Yen stated, "We were imagining brightness of yellow – red fire over our team and thinking that it would carry us from one victory to another."

Everytime Galatasaray score, the club play the last part of the song 'I Will Survive' by the Hermes House Band.

They were. I was expecting they might trial the new streaming service, but looks like we'll be relying on the opposition to stream it. It coincides (partly) with England U21 semi final as well, so chance to watch two games simultaneously.

I've just googled, as I had no idea what the last bit of I will survive by that band sounds like.

For anyone else that doesn't know either, it should start at the right place, but if not it's 2'43.

Due to the Syrian civil war many Bedouins have fled to Turkey (old school), more so than Portugal. :emoticon-0125-mmm:
