Bristol City's new signing stands out as he reveals debt to former Robins favourite In Rob Dickie, Bristol City have bought a Championship-ready defender who they hope can make a seamless transition and transformation on the first-team https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-citys-new-signing-stands-8561283
I wonder what JB's reservations were about rejoining us, it clearly wasn't a desire to continue playing in Europe? He has now signed for Millwall, do we assume he thinks Millwall have more potential to do better this season than we do? Admittedly, they were comfrtably above us the last 2 seasons, so is it short sighted by him, or does he not believe we have 'turned the corer'? read the NP reports/ interviews and the muddy waters in your vision will clear some what ... he had heart to hearts with NP AND WHILST NOT IN DEPTH comments were stated there was a sort of worry second time round he might not fit the picture.... [ imo .. fit in with NP ways of DOING AND EXPECTING ]
Could be that he’s settled and has put down roots in London and doesn’t want the hassle of commuting ? Just a guess Shame I’d have loved him to come back to us
Chelsea have signed Senegal forward Nicolas Jackson on an eight-year contract from Villarreal. AN INTERESTING MOVE! 8 years, well norm has been 3 or 4 plus 1 Looking at it if after 4 years he is surplus to requirements then anything they get is a bonus, [ assuming if had been on a 3 plus 1 he is then on a free! ] .... on 8 years they would be paying his wages until he left, but might be tempted to go as Chelsea could just pay him, not play him and he might want to play! so a mutual consent or any transfer fee they get... maybe the old way the new way forward?
Didn’t we give 10 year contracts in the late 70’s early 80’s. Culminating in the Ashton Gate 8, that didn’t go to well did it?
We did To the likes of Clive Whitehead Yes he scored the goal against Portsmouth that got us promoted But the strategy came within minutes of the club ceasing to exist a few short years later Therefore we are all eternally grateful to ‘the 8’ for being selfless
He definitely played his best football in that LJ era, which brought about his big money move. At Fulham he did well initially, as Scott Parker played him in a similar role, but when Parker left and the new guy came in, he played in a much more defensive style which really didn’t suit JB. Maybe he looked at NPs preferred style of play and thought it wouldn’t suit him, and he didn’t want to tarnish his legacy at the club, or, maybe the emergence of Pring, he realised he may not be the No 1 for that spot?
If only parachute payments had been around at the time, we’d probably be a yo-yo club now and the Ashton gate 8 wouldn’t have had to rip up their contracts, it still needs to be looked at though, find a way to prevent relegated clubs being in financial peril whilst also stopping them having a massive advantage on non p/p clubs as it is at present.
It’s their way around FFP, as they amortise the transfer fee over the length of the contract. They did it last season once the Yank took over. It’s a risky strategy, but they now have him for the best part of his career, and without fear of the ‘last year of their contract’ scenario anytime soon.
Those were my thoughts as well. 4 at the back is not his strength, he’s predominantly as wing back, also he’s also aware how good Pring is in that position, he’s going to want to be guaranteed game time, which we’d struggle to give him . He made the Correct choice imo. That was my concern as well and from our perspective the wages he’d want is a lot to pay for a what he’d bring. Now if Pring leaves it would be a different story. Then I could see the sense in bring him here.
no it didnt but under different circumstances as the "whole system " was new and the future metamorphis of it was still to unfurl. I am not saying City should adopt the same pattern again. EG hypothtical scenario ....... any club anywhere etc .... BUY a player who after all addons inc wages has cost £35m signed a 3 plus 1 deal [ ave usual ] and decides to leave at end so cost club £30m [ so roughly speaking has cost £125,000 per week ] of which £33,000 per week is wages all inc. YOU HAVE £0 VALUE AS PLAYER ON A FREE! IMAGINE Hypothetically .. having a player on a contract that spans 7 years? 6 +1 = for 6 years his cost is £40m However 2 options can sell after say 4 years for more than £10m + profit or 5 or 6 or 7 years at any sum over £5m + profit is a bonus ... Invariably players are loss makers so write off a player at contract end [ 3 +1 ] money spent still have options or start again! I have done comparison thing in the past regarding having a player AA on say £5k a week EOC [ 3 +1 ] need to replace him, player BB, so spend [ unless lucky to get freebie ] £x say £3m plus wages more than AA = on say [ 3 +1 ] = minimum of £3m expenditure! ..............think , worth giving the player AA a 2 + 1 contract on say an extra £5k a week!!! = £520k or £ 780k for 3 years! Obviously the player needs to be worth it .... HNM new contract give him £ 7k at least more than now! ...lol!!!!!!!!
Every year the mountain we have to climb to compete without a parachute becomes higher and almost an impossible task. The likes of Southampton and Leicester in particular will have to rebuild but I can already see the benefits given to them in the size of transfer payments that they can afford whereas the likes of Bristol City have to scape around at the bottom of the barrel for lucky picks and dips. Last season Luton were a trick of the light and I would swap their fortune any day of the week if it gave me a bucket list wish to see City play against the top clubs every weekend. When I look back over the last 10 or 15 years and remember all of the Bristol City players who moved on to bigger and better it does make me sad that we always have to sell our best players and try in vain to replace them with lower league talent who often can't meet the remit, and so it's back to square one again. Some of our signings in recent years have made me ask the question as to what we saw about them that made us take them on, and even more important as to why we thought they were worth 4 to 5 years of non-performances to keep them beyond their best before date? I always thought that Joe Bryan was a cut above the rest and, although I believe he gave serious thought to returning to Ashton Gate, I think his move to the New Den was the better decision as going back sometimes just doesn't work out. Good luck Joe and best wishes from me, and I think my thoughts will be loudly echoed.
It did. With the new signings, would we even afford his wages anymore, no matter how reduced. I think he’s done at BS3 tbh.
I think this is highly likely. He won’t want to be on the bench - and he will be starting for Millwall. That’s not a disrespect towards him or Millwall - we are not superior - but he won’t fit easily into Niges formation, so he’s better off at a club that plays him to his strengths. What’s the betting he scores against us when we face Millwall…??
