Hello guys, I just wanted to get some views on what they would name as the drive of the season, coming off the back of Martial's thread. Thank you. Any I have missed out - specify. Lets vote. I have gone with (predictably) Schumacher in Canada, I stayed up to watch him fly through the pack just like 1996 Barcelona, setting fastest lap times in an inferior car/catching Vettel -1 second a lap. DRS and KERS/ and the rain stopping, lost him the race win. Other than that, I thought it was a dream.
Seconded. It was one of the best drives I have ever seen, not just confined to this season. EDIT: Manny how can you seriously vote for Schumacher's drive from 8th to 4th as the greatest drive of the season when in the same pole you have got Button who went from last to first in the same race.
Mifune, I chose it because he started behind Nico, overtook both Mclarens and a Redbull (Webber) without incident in treacherous racing conditions, in a "****box". He maintained 2ND / fighting Vettel for the win, up until the rain stopped. Button had many incidents throughout the race (thus why he ended up last), that is not what I call a "drive" especially when it was in the top 2 fastest cars on the grid. I even put it up as an option for you guys - even though I don't think it is one. My opinion is only my opinion.
3rd best car over the season yes, but when the EBD's were removed for Silverstone, do you still believe he had the third best car? Just my $0.02, but I think it has to go to Button: 8 laps in he collides with Hamilton (I'm ignoring whose fault any collisions were), which probably cost him aero points, then had to serve a drive through for speeding behind the safety car. Hamilton was under investigation for similar reasons, so I think it's fair to say this was a Mclaren error. Button slipped back then, and had to change from inters to wet, and I think he was only tenth when the race was stopped 24 laps in. From the restart, he drove superbly, but then collided with Alonso, and the subsequent damage meant he had to pit, dropping him to last place of the tightly bunched pack. To then scythe through the field in the manner he did, and then pushing Vettel into a mistake, surely qualifies this as the best drive of the season. How many other drivers can claim to make 34 passes in a single grand prix. I'm pretty sure Jim Clarke may have topped it, but has anyone else?
Button canada no question. From last to 1st with rain, crashes and penalities and put off the champion Vettel.
You are making it look like falling back down the field 20 times makes a drive look good, he only had to pass the slower cars to get to the Mclarens potential finishing position..
They qualified 4th and 7th and falling down the field was not in my opinion Buttons fault. As for passing slower cars fair enough, But he was ridiculously quicker than the the two red bulls.
The car he was sat in = a race winning machine. The cars in front of him were not, most of the cars were taken on the straight anyway - including Hamilton
I'd argue the Red Bulls were still incredibly dominant at this track, and whilst Webber had an early incident with Hamilton (so did Button), Button still passed him on track, and caught up with Vettel incredibly fast. Therefore I'd say Button perhaps finished 2 places higher than you'd anticipate looking at the drivers who finished. And he overtook 34 cars in the process. Using your logic, Schumacher qualified 8th, which is perfectly ordinary for the Mercedes, then with Alonso and Hamilton out of the picture, he finishes 4th, effectively only beating his team-mate, and a seriously under performing Massa. Making 4 places, and only 2 in reality with retirements. You could even argue that he made a poor strategy call by leaving it too late to pit for slicks, trying to fight for position at the front, when pitting at the correct moment could have meant he got on the podium. Looking at it with bare facts, it's not the most spectacular race for Schumacher is it? Anyway, just my opinion, I'll await your disagreement.
Near the end Button was about 2 seconds a lap quicker than anyone else on the track. There is no way you can say that the Mclaren was 2 seconds quicker a lap quicker than cars like the Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari. That 2 seconds came from Button.
Button's win in Canada was one of the most outstanding drives of modern times. Bearing in mind the ever evolving nature of F1, it was a drive which ranks up there with the very best of all time - in my opinion.
Canada was a great race, but Button's drive wasn't that good. He made a hash of winning that race, that's why it was so exciting. He would've been lapped once, maybe twice if safety cars and the red flag didn't keep wiping Vettel's lead. He also had by far the fastest car, you only had to look at how much harder Vettel was having to push to go half a second slower. And he didn't really have to do any overtakes because the DRS zone was ridiculous. The two that stand out for me are Vettel in Barcelona and di Resta in Singapore. They're not on the list though so I'm going for Heidfeld's, it was textbook driving in a slower car, jump everyone at the start, ruin their races as much as possible then pick up the pieces later on.
If Button had good DRS advantage - why did all the others not also use it. Bit of a strange argument to use?
Button in Canada easiy the drive of the season, if not the decade. As to schunmacher, yo u think it's the drive of the season simly because he managed to beat Rosberg? Before I even looked at anything I knew you'd already voted for him, says it all about you really. Edit: And 20% of the choices are Schumacher, what a stupid poll.
