First of all I'm not getting ahead of myself, but with each win this record is getting closer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_records_in_England#Top-flight_Appearances 25 wins at home set by Bradford Park Avenue in 1926-1927. It's not beyond us, but as you are all aware Nigel has instilled the mind set in the players that it's winning games during the 90 minutes not before hand. Here are the fixtures we need to win to match and beat this record: Brighton (19th Nov) Hull (29th Nov) Blackpool (10th Dec) Palace (26th Dec) Bristol (30th Dec) Leicester (23rd Jan) **Record Matched** Cardiff (31st Jan) ***Record Breakers*** Personally I think 4 of those games are winable, Brighton will be a test after the international break. Leicester will be a different team with Nigel in charge and Cardiff are always slippery customers! That said it is not beyond this Team to get these results and put this team in the record books where they belong.
Surely the whole point is that nowadays ALL games at SMS are winnable, whoever comes? There will be no complacency, but a plan (and a Plan B and Plan C) will be ready for each game.
The only team I think we will struggle against at home "maybe" is P*mpey. Not in a football playing sense, but just because of the occasion as a whole.
I'm 99.99% sure that that 25 game record is LEAGUE ONLY. Our current 19 game winning run includes 2 cup games. Try as I might, I haven't managed to find out what the record is for all competitions. It may be more than 25, it may be less than 25, or it might well be that 25 (if BPA didn't have any home cup games during that 25 game winning run, and no other club can beat 25 when their cup games are included).
Also, we could potentially have a home FA Cup game (3rd round or 3rd round replay) before the Leicester home game, and/or a home FA Cup game (4th round) before the Cardiff game.
as much as we are absolutely insanely amazing at home i just cant see it happening. surely someone will stop us?!
Spent a good 10mins of my lunch break to research this. I can verify st brendy that BPA's record is 25 consecutive league matches so you're 100% correct on this.
Well done, Le Tiss. We can all got back and start counting again. Just a cautionary note, do we have to presume that this was the same BPA that have just been beaten by Totton 8-1? Goes to show records and history mean nowt
Yes, pretty much. They were known simply as Bradford FC back then, and played at Park Avenue. But they went into liquidation back in the 1970s, and have subsequently reformed as Bradford Park Avenue. They are yet to regain football league status though.
Again though, I think that's league only (whilst trying to find out what the record is for all competitions, I remember reading that the all-time top flight record is 21 by Liverpool, and the all-time Premiership record is 19 by Man Utd)
Well, if we don't manage to beat the 25 consecutive home wins target, we will just have to be content with the most home wins in a season record. I would settle for that.
Jenny, no-one in that division will stop you at home. Can't see it happening. Has a side ever gone through a full season with a 100% home record?
Sorry to butt in... Not as far as I know. Last season, in League One, Brighton nearly did have an unbeaten home record. Saints put an end to that one.
Reading have the record for most home wins in a Championship season (since the Championship was formed from the Old Division). They won 19 out of 23 in the 2005/06 season. Recently, as far as the top flight goes; last season, Manchester United won 18 out of their 19 league matches at home, with the one game their failed to win being a draw. Chelsea did exactly the same in the 2005/06 season. However, the record for 100% home wins in a season go to these 6 clubs: Sunderland (13 games; First Division, 1891–92) Liverpool (14 games; Second Division, 1893–94) Bury (15 games; Second Division, 1894–95) Sheffield Wednesday (17 games; Second Division, 1899–1900) Small Heath (17 games; Second Division, 1902–03) Brentford (21 games; Third Division South, 1929–30)
Just checked we are on 18 league wins at the minute - dating back to the 0-0 draw with Notts County. It would also be a bigger feat than BPA as they were third division (League 1).
