To be fair, Smug, I'd much rather explore Tuscany. Beautiful food, beautiful countryside, beautiful wine, the history... Compare that to being stuck in a small dark tube for 4 hours seeing nothing for most of the time you're in there. To be honest I'd rather explore Whitley Bay
I wanted to live and work there for a few years, we had opportunities but Mrs Smug didn't fancy it ... .. this is Tuscany BTW, not Whitley Bay
A deep see exploration specialist had a discussion with the CEO over emails previously: The specialist said that he was potentially putting his clients at risk to which the CEO responded that he was "tired of industry players who try to use a safety argument to stop innovation". The specialist suggested he was being arrogant, mirroring the titanic cry: "She is unsinkable". The CEO replied "We have heard the baseless cries of 'you are going to kill someone' way too often, I take this as a serious personal insult." Not only was the specialist correct but the CEO has killed himself, 4 others, ruined his company, destroyed the lives of employees and family members of the deceased and cost a fortune in terms of rescue attempts. It seems to be a common trait these days that entrepreneurs' and people with power tend to have ego's so large that they think all rules are beneath them, whether legal or the laws of physics. Fortunately for him, he doesn't live to see the damage he's done.
What a bellend Boris Johnson has paid tribute to the “heroes” who died in the Titan submersible tragedy and lashed out at “lefties” who have questioned the expedition to the Titanic wreckage. Former prime minister Mr Johnson has now waded in, using his second column for the Daily Mail to say the crew members died while “pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge and experience” - saying it filled him with “pride”.
That'll be the same "lefties" who brought in Health and Safety at work and stopped 1000's of needless deaths down mines and on building sites each and every year. Bloody red tape.
“ human knowledge “. They went to look at something already seen. If 20 never before seen species of fish passed by I doubt they’d have mentioned them
They were warned that the design of the submersible and the materials used to build it weren't up to safety standards. But, they carried on regardless.
According to the BBC, 'people across the diving community', various experts and everyone from Rob McCallum to James Cameron have questioned this entire enterprise ... ... but Johnson declares that it's just a bunch of lefties in the same way he dismisses anything that doesn't suit his narrative. Even if they discovered mermaids, Atlantic and the Titanic's captain, still at the wheel, it wouldn't make the passengers heroes. They've paid for a ticket on a sightseeing trip, simple as that.
Not sure those who paid for the trip knew of the sub not being up to standard though, just the knob who built it? There’s been loads of dives down to the titanic and will probably be loads more. James Cameron has done it over 30 times. People are interested in different things and if you’ve the money to do it then why not? Obviously when you sign up to something like this you know the risk but people aren’t sympathetic because they’re rich it’s as simple as that. If it was a couple of poor folk offered the trip of a lifetime to see titanic who imploded the world would be in mourning
I think what he's referring to is the perception that some people are saying that they deserved to die because they were rich, as described in these articles. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/titani...al-media-anti-billionaire-sentiment-rcna90520 https://www.eviemagazine.com/post/billionaires-deserve-to-die-everything-need-know-lost-submarine https://nypost.com/2023/06/22/the-left-says-stockton-rush-deserves-to-die-for-backing-gop/ https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/0...agedy-brings-out-worst-in-eat-the-rich-crowd/
Everyone is sympathetic but it doesn't mean that obliterates everything else like basic safety concerns or the safety of everyone involved in the rescue mission in hostile conditions. And, if you're preaching about how people should feel, what gives you the right to call someone a knob when you've no idea what caused the tragedy.
I just looked at those articles and they're just the same as Boris's. It's just various media claiming that people are saying they deserved to die because they were rich without any proof. It's their perception and their 'sources' seem to be the lost and lonely souls of Twitter. There'll always be some absolute nutter on the Internet to prove your point if you're so desperate. There are websites for all kinds of extremists but it doesn't mean everyone supports terrorisism or the Ku Klux Klan.
It’s all over the news from other experts and those who’ve done excursions themselves, some on board the titan, that Stockton Rush bought budget parts to save money and experimented with stuff that put peoples lives in danger. You reckon he declared that when he asked each passenger to fork out £250k? When SpaceX finally start taking passengers to space and someone’s paying £1m for a seat do you think they’re going to want a rocket built for purpose or parts that can only withstand the pressure of flying within earths atmosphere?
Yeah, it is their perception, that's what I said, these articles are saying that some people's reaction suggests that they deserved to die. But that's what Johnson is referring to, he's not calling Cameron and the submersible experts lefties.
It was typically idiotic and divisive of Johnson . It was supposed to be a solemn tribute to the dead not an opportunity to being Lefties into it. The bloke is a bellend.
None of it is actually respectable articles suggesting that they deserved to die. It's all the media creating a story by reacting to the odd lunatic has spouted nonsense on social media. I'm sure they could find a few thousand on social media who think it's a conspiracy theory or an insurance scam if they wanted to, but they're more interested in stirring up the culture war, because that's what fits their agenda.
