The one interesting thing for me about Vicario is if this deal has been based on the data/ analytics model that rumours said we were looking at switching to a couple months back and going down the Brentford and Brighton route but just with a bigger budget.

No one here can hand on heart say they’d really heard of Vicario prior to the last 24 hours, or certainly wouldn’t have had him down as a GK preferential target of theirs to replace Lloris yet here we are looking at possibly our new number one.

There is an air of ‘Rodon - Skriniar’ about it but equally IF this is indeed a signing based on the data model, it could be an intriguing and exciting one. We’re due a bit of the latter.

There could also be a hint of Mitoma in it, how many had heard of him before last season?

    Fair dos, lol.

It is a weird one, especially as Raya was right there for the taking and wanting to come.

We had links with Raya too, maybe he just wasn't for sale this window end of story.

That’s what I’m saying by the data based/ analytical model. It’s how Brentford and Brighton target and sign these unknown players that end up becoming top ballers.

It’s just whether Vicario is indeed a result of that or the club’s just found out some rando in Serie A will cost half the price of Raya and therefore we jumped at it.

I’d like to think there’s some proper planning behind it.

100% for sale, just at £40m. We supposedly didn’t wanna go above £25m-£30m.

I think Brentford expect to sell him as they’ve already signed his replacement, they’re just not gonna be pushed over on price. Fair play to them too. Might even end at you lot now, de Gea looks finished.

Seems to be thier modus operandi, get a player who fit's their team/system, play him for a while then sell at a good profit and bring his replacement in at half the price.
Keeps them solvent (and more) whilst achieving above expectations.

Let’s hope we haven’t bid for the next Gollini. Especially as we’re replacing our long term goalkeeper, and this isn’t about finding a bench warmer.
we’ve gotta get the right GK, and he need to hit the ground running. best of luck to levy if it appears he’s gone for the cheap option and it doesn’t pan out. <yikes>

So he wants to leave the club? Obviously that means Fulham won't be lowering their price...

There's definitely some data-based analysis behind it

...of course, the UKIPpers are either screaming conspiracy theories about Paratici still being at the club, or spouting antisemitic tropes

I definitely hope this is somewhat of the basis behind the decision to sign him. At the end of the window we should gain an idea as to how we’ve attacked this market and if Vicario was indeed the first signing based off of our new model or if it was just a sort of “here’s Rodon, not Skriniar” type of deal. Ultimately as long as Ange has given the thumbs up to it too then I’m intrigued to see how he (and others) work out.

I do also wonder if a small part of the decision to sign him coincides with Udogie’s arrival, Udogie speaks very good English but having a fellow Italian could help a player to settle easier in a new league and country, no idea if Vicario speaks English so it’ll be beneficial for him too having Udogie around.

Many journalists are saying the written bid has gone in and the deal is now very close to completion. Good luck to the guy, has huge boots to fill.

I've seen mention of him speaking English, as he has a Ukrainian family staying with him and uses Google Translate to go Ukrainian-English-Italian

...oh ****, are we unintentionally ****ing over the Ukrainian family staying with him?

Rahman Osman claims Ange has spoken to Vicario.

Ally Gold says Vicario was considered the second best GK in Serie A last season after Onana and was Inter’s prime target to replace Onana (if he leaves) whilst Utd, Juve, Napoli and Brighton were all looking at him too. So sounds like he’s been on the radar of good clubs, even if barely anything had been mentioned about him until recently.

Of course, now that we're being like Brighton, the Lunatic Fringe are howling that we're not being like Arsenal

Leave the goalposts where they were, just once, leave the ****ing goalposts where they were

Good to see a positive spin on the new GK from people who aren’t Spurs-centric and clearly watch the league more than most. Ali Gold is great but does usually try and drum up some enthusiasm for new signings even if the wider fanbase is sceptical.

Described in the above segment as commanding in his box, comfortable playing the ball out from the back, and doing the sweeper-keeper stuff too. So hopefully a well-rounded modern goalie. Apparently Bayern looked at him in January when Neuer got his injury, and he was the option for Inter if Onana moves on this summer.

So fingers crossed this could be a good one.

He makes some good saves and seems happy to use his feet to do so, too.
I'd have a few questions about him based purely on the few clips I've seen, though.

Quite a lot of his double or triple saves are due to palming the ball back into dangerous areas.
His command of the area seems questionable and he's rooted in the six-yard box.
He punches too much when he could claim, but that may be a modern keeper issue in general.

There's also the fact that he's never played outside of Italy, so that's an unknown factor.
He has no European or international experience, which isn't an issue this season, admittedly.
I'd also question why Empoli are happy to let him go for a reasonable fee.
I can't find out how long his contract with them is, either.

Yeah, nothing about the contract on transfermarkt. It’s interesting that some of the footage I’ve also seen echoes what you say, but then again there’s people saying that he generally does command his box well. I guess we’ll just have to see, if it happens.
