Just been listening to an interview of one of the writers of "The Simpsons" who went last year with the same company .and his wife who didn't go. She was dissuaded from them both being on the same journey to the wreck. Asked if they would go now if it ended in a good outcome, he said yes, she no.

Flip Flops would be silly, sandals would be better, you can keep your socks on to keep your toes warm, a few nails through the bottom might work?

I hope you typed that correctly and autocorrect didn't misbehave, otherwise the search results could have been very disturbing.....

Dear me you lot are terrible....these poor rich people with more money than sense deserve our support and not having the piss ripped out of them.
I'm having a couple of nights away in Dumfries and if I'd known I could have spent that money booking up with you lads...never mind don't forget to send a postcard.

TBH I just realised I've missed a massive opportunity.

I could've charged gullible idiots a quarter of a million quid.to sit in my 'submarine' while images of the 'Titanic' appeared on my screens for five minutes ... oops I meant submarine windows ... then total darkness for the rest of the time.

    What a fkin idiot I was <doh>

All this talk of our upcoming trip to Everest takes me back to my last mountaineering jaunt. Genuine story, bear with me while I indulge myself in the telling.

Donkeys years ago I did the 3 peaks challenge. I lost a good mate so did it for a charity in his honour. The charity basically demanded a minimum sponsorship to cover costs as well as raise money. You might imagine not everybody doing a charity challenge like this is really fit enough, or prepared enough right? Well the charity took genuine mountaineers along, qualified in mountain rescue, with all the gear. These fellas used it as training for their next expedition, which was for most the really big peaks in nepal and pakistan. I had to sign a waiver for this trip!

Anyway I turn up in Cheltenham the night before, as that is the launch pad. Snowdon first. I get up for the bus and I look around at some of those joining in and think to myself god help you. Some honestly didnt look anywhere near fit enough, and frankly some just looked like they had walked out of a mountain clothing shop, everything was so new. I was into fell running at the time, and plenty of hill walking in the peaks. About 30 or so started bottom of Snowden.

You could join a quick or slow group. I would have gone slow but not having seen the clip of some of them. Anyway straight up and down Snowden no bother. About 6 people got half way up and quit, escorted back down by a mountain leader. No idea what they thought it would be like.

Bus trip to Scafell which was to be a night climb. Stopped on the way for food. Fish and Chips for me, with mushy peas. Far too many eating pasta or jacket potatoes. Just load the calories in man. Got to scafell and couple more dropped out without getting off the bus. Up we go, after an hour more drop out. About 15 of us left now, not even half way! I fall on the boulder field and dont realise until much later my knee is gashed. It was that cold I didnt realise. On the summit it was blowing an absolute gale. I huddled in behind the cairn and drank coffee and gobbled a kendal mint cake. We went down at a right old pace and the sunset as we hit the valley was stunning. Knee patched up by a mountain man who was no nurse that is for sure.

Bus to Ben Nevis, via full english with extra eggs. The snow line was really low. The guides were a bit nervous about taking everybody left up. They split us into a group of 8 to go first, and the ones they werent sure about came after. We fly up to the snow line. Then we find the false summit point for everyone doing the challenge. Basically the weather is awful. We crack on, sod it. Complete white out within a few hundred metres. So bloody cold as well. Then, out of nowhere, we find a lady sat in our path. Ankle foot pointing at right angles. Mountain rescue fellas spring into action. Tent up, hot soup on the go, satellite phones out. We stand for no more than 7 or 8 minutes but begin to freeze. Decision is one guide stays in the tent with her whilst seeing what Ben Nevis mountain rescue are going to do. We will all quick pace it to the summit and back. That trek was genuinely scary, no visibility, winds and snow, icy cold. My fingers were starting to numb. Remember this is in the UK, but man is it dangerous up there. When we get back to the tent we find the helicopter cant get to her. The mountain guides with us have to stretcher her down to a point they can reach. The 8 of us left commit to going back down alone and off we go. At this point I just wanted down below the snow I was that cold and tired. We get down half way and I eat 2 Ginsters cheese and onion pasties. Relief. We get down fine, back to the hotel where a party is laid on for us. The two mountaineers return 6 hours later, utterly knackered. The helicopter picked the woman up off them, but wasnt insured to bring them down. They had to walk. One went to visit her in hospital the next morning before we left and she was facing 10 days in hospital and surgery. No doubt she would have died had we not gone above the stop point and had some serious mountain lads with all the gear.

Not sure why I shared this now. Best not to go with me to Everest anyway! Also I suppose it shows how dangerous exciting things are. Not comparing this to the sub problems in reality, but I did go back and do the 3 peaks again a couple of years later with mates.
