OceanGate are partnered with the Memorial University of Newfoundland to give internships to students to work on their deep-sea technology. I think thats what they mean. Presumably so that the students can understand how crap this particular deep-sea technology is.
Surely the most effective way to make the best use of rescue services, technology and other resources is not to go down four miles in a vessel that can't navigate. They can't interact, in any way, with the wreck, so there's no science involved ... ... they were there to gawp at a tragedy and may have created another.
From what I've read, this vessel has no approval from any statutory authority, something stressed on the waiver which passengers must sign. It is a self declared experimental excercise, and you could say that this fact in itself is " scientific". But no experiment should risk the lives of people on a commercial basis. I really do think that The Titanic should be left to itself. It is a watery grave best left alone.
I'm not surprised it's been given no approval. When you look at pictures of it in comparison to other similar vessels, and to other vessels that have investigated the Titanic, its clearly inferior.
It seems so. All sorts of stuff not installed it seems . You had to be bolted into it from the outside! There could be a land of talking dinosaurs playing cricket down there, and I still wouldn't go near that souped up bath tub to see them.
The reports coming out this morning about how it has been constructed should have been ringing alarm bells before setting off.
I think the bells were rang by a few people, and ignored by a powerful CEO, who is actually on board this trip.
A specialist has just claimed that the equipment they are using does not detect noises from deep down, therefore casting some doubt on the rescue.
Might be a bit Inappropriate to mention it now, but if there is a rescue this will be a film on one of the streaming services by back of next year. Netflix have probably already got some figures ready to go for the rights!
I'd guess that a banging noise travels ten times slower, and less far, in water than air suggesting it could be on the surface ... ... that really is a guess BTW.
Good idea but I'm not sure how interesting it could be. It'd be like an episode of the Young Ones ... ... five people in a confined space, terrible hygiene, constant arguments and lots of shouting
Wonder if Vyvyan could rebuild his submarine to embark on a daring rescue. please log in to view this image
I'm pretty sure sound moves faster through water than air (and even faster through solids). I think by default it would also travel further, but due to the differing water pressures it will only travel easily in certain directions at certain depths... So any signals could potentially be heard for miles in any direction on the same plane, but if the rescuers are just a few metres above them they might not be able to pick it up. This is calling back to my A level physics days mind so could all be bollocks
Sound travels a lot faster and further in water but it's more difficult to determine where it's coming from.
I've thought about this and I reckon the company have a legal problem here. However cleverly they think they've constructed the contract a top solicitor will destroy it and, don't forget, two of the passengers are millionaires so their families can afford the best. They'll argue that, despite the wavers, there should be a reasonable expection that the support vessel has the means to rescue, or at least locate, the submarine. It's also reasonable to expect, if the submarine is floating, that a hatch can be opened from the inside to allow oxygen in, fire flares and send radio or location signals. Etc etc etc. If these people aren't found the company will be four miles deep into litigation. Not only that, the Canadian authorities will be sued for allowing such an idiotic venture to proceed. It's the equivalent of allowing a bloke to build a rocket in his shed and charge people to go into space. Absolutely ridiculous imo.
here smug ...i am organising a jaunt up the old himalaya hills like, with a little bimble to the top of everest, don't worry mind, i know i have zero experience and no back up but i can supply a pair of high-tec byoots and a couple of hiking poles and might get me hands on a couple of wooly hats...once we leave base camp we will lose all contact with everyone else in the world and our walk will take us to places unknown, oh, and you will have to sign a document to absolve me of all blame if summit gans wrang lyk. anyone with sense would immediately tell me to 'go feck myself' and rightly so yet it is (apart from money) pretty similar to what was offered in that trip.
