The trouble is principles and understandings normally come with age, so I’d be less surprised/disappointed with Neves in his mid 20’s taking the doe than I would with Ronaldo or Benzema in their late 30’s
I get your point but I have equal disdain for all of them. Just as an aside, I would feel that I'd failed as a parent if my children didn't have established principles before their mid 20's.
Well, retirement in a place paying you a lot after your career and legacy is set up is purely down to moral call. Messi made a call and never mentioned a word about human rights etc. he had a house in miami and all that stuff. I can't say if messi had any morals in his design making. Ronaldo went over there so is amoral neves clearly has given up on his career and is amoral as well
Saudi the new China. It wasn't that long ago China was paying top money for famous names to try and raise the profile of their league but never happened. The Sauds are probably throwing even more money at it, bit you can't build a whole league like that overnight.
Would money influence me if I were a top tier footballer? Absolutely. It wouldn't be my only driver... I mean, if I could play for Liverpool or alongside Derek Asamoah it would be hard to beat that situation... But if I were playing for "Midtable FC" and someone offered to double my wages. You bet, I'd be likely to take up that opportunity... But don't think I'd ever go to S.A. I probably wouldn't last long there with my head attached to my neck.
I'd rather be happy with the environment I'm in, plus I wouldn't want to drag my family all over the place so I seriously don't think I'd be influenced by the money. It's not like they're getting paid pennies to begin with either. But I also realise I'm a minority; I've turned more money down to stay where I am despite only just getting by at times. Happiness over wealth every single time for me.
this is the question. are you a top tier say.... I dunno david Beckham or are you a proper top tier like haaland, lewandowski, modric etc. if you believe you can have a legendary career them the money is automatic. haaland has worked his contracts is a very confident way that these clubs simply cannot turn him down and its on his terms. that's how confident he is in being top tier. he's arrive and I'm pretty sure the 900k a week hidden under the table etc is not as important as the Treble and the goals. same for messi, he was there to play and it was ego that required money on parity with Ronaldo etc. nobody plays for free. we are not ****ing thick lads. the point is these guys can be legends or be forgotten. and an excellent way to be forgotten is going to saudi
same here . i could have got more money but we had enough to live on and work were quite flexible and understanding with my particular circumstances so i happily stayed .
I'd absolutely agree happiness trumps money every single time. That said, I don't think moving necessarily means less happiness. I wouldn't want to hop around needlessly, but opportunities to live in new cultures, etc, is great. Naturally, family does matter... That's ultimately why I'm still in the US. Wife and I have grand dream of moving to New.Zealand or Australia some day... But not while kids are in school.
I'm in the minority with you. I think people are afraid to speak up sometimes for fear of going against the majority view (or what appears to be the majority view) when sometimes it really isn't, it's just the loud voices hogging all the airtime. Not something you could be accused of
of course not but he won't be forgotten as Mito claimed because whatever we think of him as a human being he is counted asa footballing great .
Some will view it as a tainted legacy. A similar example - Rafa went down in some people's estimation when he went to Everton. We all probably have examples of people that spoiled how we used to feel about them by doing something wrong or daft or whatever. It's hard to see them in the same way again and I'd say people break down into roughly 50/50 with regard to seeing the good they did before, being wiped out. So there will be some for whom Ronaldo's achievements won't be regarded in the same way.
