I saw one the other week (can't remember the link or anything sorry!) in which it had two clips of the same keeper making massive cock ups in consecutive games, after the mistake in the second game, he actually ran off the pitch, threw his shirt to the ground and put his hand in the air as a sorry gesture to the fans, looked as if he was crying too... Felt sorry for him in a way but at the same time was pure comedy brilliance.
There's a debate in itself, if you had to suffer humiliation which would you prefer, a miss as a striker?, or a humdinger like that as a keeper?...what a choice!
It was a long time ago, but at primary school we were taught to aim wide of the goal when passing to the keeper - good advice!
To avoid humiliation I'd just be a defensive midfielder Never expected to score and if your team concedes it's usually the defence that get blamed! , though if you play like Scotty Parker you become a real crowd favourite! If I had to choose from the two, it'd definitely be the miss as a striker. There's a possibility you could score your next chance and depending on how the result panned out it could be forgotten and even if your team lost you'll only get a bit of stick for a week or two (roughly!) As a keeper, you make one clanger and you'll be remembered for it for years! Robinson vs Croatia. Seaman vs Brazil. Gomes vs Fulham, Udinese, Bolton, Inter Milan, Madrid, Chelsea... Oh wait...
Keepers do get more stick it seems, unfair perhaps, but its always been the same. "If I had to choose from the two, it'd definitely be the miss as a striker. There's a possibility you could score your next chance"...unless your name is Torres! I think Bobby Zamoras v Everton was just as bad.
You are certainly right SoS. The players who cost us our CL place last year were whoever happened to be playing out of Defoe, Crouch and Pav who missed numerous sitters all season. Gomes errors cost us two points at most and he saved a lot more - yet he has almost no support on here. Defoe scores a few goals and is immediately back in favour. If Defoe was being measured on errors like Gomes is then he'd not be picked ever again
PowerSpurs is right, it's the defender's fault. I know it sounds funny, but if he aims that wide of the goal then there's no chance that it'll happen. Neville did the same to Robinson and escaped all blame, too.
I agree with backpass bit ordinarily, but their were 2 forwards running in, the keeper doesn't look left footed, so if the defender had played it to go wide of the other post, perhaps he thought the ball might have been nearer one of those forwards. Despite this basic rule, you see it every weekend, backpasses between posts.
It's far easier to blame the England player who doesn't play for Man Utd... If anything, Gomes hasn't done anything that bad - although something like that was inches away from happening the time Jason Cundy misjudged a back pass to Ian Walker.
To be fair to Neville, I think he tried to shoulder the blame himself, if I remember correctly. Didn't happen, but you can't fault him for trying.
What I don't understand is how Neville's error, coupled with a huge slice of bad luck, essentially ended Robbo's England career - similar incidents didn't see David James dumped on the Liverpool scrapheap overnight, or Ian Walker onto ours.
I believe Robinson is still England's best keeper and has been treated shabbily by the team Management.
Robbo was a blinding keeper and still is to be fair, but Hart is the best English keeper at the moment by quite some way I feel. If he stays consistent then the England jersey will be his for a very, very long time.
Wonder what the manager was thinking as he turned away with his head in his hands?"Could I get a job driving a bus? It's got to be easier!!!!"
Yet where is the media hounding of Almunia, Fabianski, Kuszczak, Turnbull - you know, dodgy keeper from teams that Sky Sports has built their coverage around to the detriment of 80% of the Premier League teams every season?
