Just to be pedantic, SecondStain, Tim Gudgin took over from Len Martin in 1995 after Len's death. Len was the one who set the standard for football result broadcasting with the distinctive rise and fall of his voice depending on whether it was a home win, away win, or draw. Tim Gudgin had previously just done the rugby scores but when he took over from Len Martin he kept the same style of delivery.
Don't worry about being pedantic, Chilco. Now that ties up my memory of Tim Gudgin's voice being slightly different when I was much younger - it wasn't the same announcer..! So it was Len Martin. And, yes, I remember the distinctive rise and fall delivery too. Why did Southampton always have the falling delivery..?
