There is no question over the talent he had in the game, one of the most gifted players ever, for England. However its the professional side of his game, and his persona which need looking at. World cup 1990, crying in the semi final against Germany, a top pro just would not have done that, what a boost this must have given the Germans, this is supposed to be pro football for goodness sake, not brief encounter with Trevor Howard, and Celia Johnson. Nobody should get a job on reputation, it has to be earnt, best person for the job should get it. Seem to recall a 39 day sojourn at Kettering, where he was a complete disaster, rumours were, that drink played a part, however hope he is now dry, and keeps it that way, would love to see him firing on all cylinders.

I spoke to Gazza a couple of years back while he was manager of Kettering. They were playing my home town, on a Tuesday night. (Redditch 0-4 Kettering). He was very listless and did not seem in the least bothered what was happening on the football pitch. I asked him about the chances of promotion for his team, got no reply, then asked "Have you seen 5 bellies lately". "Only when I look at your wife", was the reply. So yeah he still has a sense of humor.

He will have a long struggle for the rest of his life, whether he survives it will depend on the choices he makes and the support he receives.

I can only guess, every boozer he passes, every birthday or Christmas party that he attends, every idiot that offers him a drink, will be a massive hurdle and that is just the booze.

He was clearly very emotional in the interview, personally for me that demonstrates a weakness and regrettably not the strength mentally that will be required.

Mentally and emotionally inadequate, and will not last long unfortunately.

Bad start in life coupled with a lack of support, and no one spotting he was a nut nut = ****ed.

    Great player though.

A sublimely gifted player, a deeply troubled but still loveable human being.

    A f*****g looney, basically.

Picked up his autobiography from a pound shop not long ago, brilliant read and changed my opinion of the guy totally, yes he made the choice to drink smoke take drugs but jesus has that guy had to fight to survive. His childhood was not the perfect way to start life alcohol was a family issue well before Gazza became famous, his personality is such that he is like millions of others prone to addiction he has turned to substance's to replace the love and security he couldent find anywhere else. He had so much so young and the world at his feet, he was at his peak the most entertaining footballer on the planet if only he had signed for sir alex perhaps he wouldent have ended up this way. 9 months dry is a massive achievment keep sober Paul and come back to the sport you can still give so much to!
