It's interesting to watch it all unfold, particularly the various techniques to produce hydrogen and alternative fuels, as they're mainly old technology, or new technology that as yet doesn't work very well, and tends to produce more emissions and use more energy than the fuel they want to replace. Electrolysis is unlikely to be able to produce a meaningful amount, and needs rare metals for the process too. The main methods to produce hydrogen for combustion is pretty much a revision on the methods used to produce towns gas, before it was replaced by 'natural' gas. The German car industry is currently trying to promote what it describes as 'efuel', which adds hydrogen to atmospheric CO2 to produce...erm, a hydrocarbon, albeit arguably a better one. The technique (Fischer–Tropsch process) was developed after World War One, and improved further at the insistence of Hitler to give them fuel independence. They liquefied coal, and it provided about 50% of their war needs. It would have been more, but we kept bombing the production plants. I think we left the one in Auschwitz alone. Part of the issue with hydrogen is that it's a small molecule, so stopping it leaking can be problematic. The explosion risk is real, but often overstated, but in the atmosphere it affects the reduction of methane, which itself has a high warming potential and it's likely more of that will be released anyway of we're not burning it directly. Storing it requires high pressures, and cooling, and trying to pipe it brings in other problems, which mean it needs to be mixed with other gasses. That leaves producing at the point of use, which can limit it depending which process is used, and each have their own issues, and the final end use can also have problems due to the faster flame speed and wider combustion range, plus unless it's burned in a sealed unit, it will increase nitrous oxides in the local area. Even then, it generally needs to be converted to some other form of energy to be usable, so each time it gets converted in that chain, reduces the efficiency and increases the cost and complexity. One factor above all of this, is that the announcement that they were banning new internal combustion engines soon, meant the manufacturers shelved the research into reducing emissions from ICE vehicles, which means technology will have stood still for decades, and the impacts will be felt for decades after that. I don't think enough was done i for looking into improvements in existing engines, combined with finding ways to reduce the need to travel by private transport. The amount of money wasted on pie in the sky schemes would have made a good dint in that research budget.
