I'm losing track of how many PM's we have at the moment ... ... here's another Cut taxes, build more houses and ditch the culture wars, says Penny Mordaunt 'The Commons leader also says it is important to stop attacking institutions doing their work in what seemed a veiled swipe at Boris Johnson.'
I agree. But for context, up to 2018 Tony Blair had reveived over £1m in payments under the scheme. It was revealed under an FOI process. You couldnt argue he was short of a few quid either I suppose, nor did he leave a positive legacy for the country. At the time it was shown in 2017 Blair and Brown and Major (if memory serves) claimed the max allowed, Cameron about half. No idea what the current protocols are but sure I read Truss was allowed it, despite her short time in office. I seem to remember there was a fuss about Nick Clegg being entitled but he was. In principle I have no problem with it. I can imagine ex PMs still conduct business relevant to the state. I am not sure it is as transparent as it should be, certainly if it took an FOI to see what Blair was getting you would imagine not. Plus a million quid seems a lot of business for Blair on the face of it. Taxpayers money and all that.
All true. But we know it's all about Tories not getting it here. Everyone else is fine. A million and Tony Blair - name a more iconic duo.
I do find it odd that we blame 13 years of tory decision making on torys alone, without remembering what they inherited when walking into the job. Some of the decisions a govt makes can take 20+ years to unwind. PFI contracts, so popular 15 years ago and beyond, is an example causing major challenges in my local community. The tories have failed miserably in govt. They will be remembered as the most abject I suspect in modern history. Unfortunately there has been no fit for purpose opposition or they would have been booted for austerity. It is a sad indictment on our political system that nobody was deemed better after their first 8 years. I get hammered for saying this but Labours implosion is a contributory factor to this Tory govt longevity. Now we have a govt eating itself from the inside. It is embarassing to watch for our country. We have a scandal engulfing one of our devolved parliaments too. There is a brilliant book entitled "why we get the wrong politicians" which shows a glimmer of what might be needed. I noted today an independant party politician in Warrington (i think) who had been having success on the ground on genuine societal issues, moved to Liberal because she cant make the progress she wants because of how our politics are setup. First past the post specifically. I may get passionate at times, but I can honestly see nothing but the same old same old going forward. Tory bashing is easy, they have made it so, my 12 year old niece articulates it well. Much more challenging to ask the so what and why questions - what is better an why, rather than what is least worse. Take an example. Boris being beaten up for his peerages, rightly. It is just a repeat of Blair and the investigations (including criminal) into his peerages I would suggest. I remember all too well the cash for honours scandal. I see Starmer looking to the Blair play book, and I even read Blair has provided some advice. Why is Starmer politics different to Blair politics? We seem to be in a repeptitive cycle of allowing one party to fail, then another, with each winning because they are less bad, not because they are what is needed. I find it frankly sad we seem prepared to accept it, cycle after cylcle.
The reason you find it odd is that you've just imagined it imo, no one has actually said it on here or anywhere else I've seen ... ... and it's a pretty poor excuse tbh, really is. The Tories came in with all of the conditions you've mentioned claiming they'd put things right and, after thirteen years, haven't made things any better, worse if anything. And to even try to lay the blame at the feet of the opposition, come on. If that's really a valid excuse you've just given complete immunity to the next lot.
I was not referring to just on here, odd you think I was, but each to their own. Thanks for the condescending post though. I have not imagined this in my opinion, but you are entitled to think I have of course.
"no one has actually said it on here or anywhere else I've seen." I made it quite clear that I was referring to this forum and elsewhere ... ... and if you're referring to people elsewhere why not discuss it with them. If you're not quoting anyone on here you're just talking out loud unless you can produce a quote saying that people are only blaming the Tories.
No I didn’t say that, it’s not fine but he is an exception to any rules. He will do whatever he believes is good for him.
Your original post, that I quoted if you care to look, seems to have been edited since I quoted it. Your post, that I referenced, clearly stated on here only.
No it was definitely edited, I often do that after I've dashed off a post and wish to clarify something. My point remains that you're claiming people have only blamed the Tories but you don't mention that it's only people away from this forum. Therefore easy to believe you're including posters on here.
GB News sources confirm the suspect in the fatal stabbing of three people in Nottingham is a West African migrant with a history of violence. Is this why there's a government response to the triple killings, their immigration system is in tatters?
WTF now Tue 13th Jun 2023 19.32 "No 10 is planning a multimillion-pound taxpayer-funded campaign to promote Rishi Sunak’s “five priorities”, despite some within the civil service having questioned whether it was too political." https://amp.theguardian.com/politic...ities-campaign-despite-civil-service-concerns .... but no money for nurses.
No offence mate but this is daft. The govt always respond to such a despicable act. You seeming to try and score political points after less than 12 hours on this doesnt sit well. I work in Nottingham, and I have seen today the impact this has had. Time and a place to blame the govt, if indeed they are to blame.
Evidence of the complete ideological capture we're seeing more and more of - 'the Tories are evil therefore I'm justified in doing or saying anything, because I'm fighting evil'
Good point, just my immediate concern, we shall see. Hopefully the police get to the bottom of the reason quickly.
Evil Tory MPs - I wonder where that reputation comes from? Let’s start with over 300 of them voting against free school meals for the poorest kids in the country during a cost of living crisis they presided over while scheming to give additional tax breaks to some. Billionaires.
Whichever way you look at it, the country isn't in great shape. Nothing that Boris Johnson is doing is helping the country. He builds his entire image as this 'British bulldog Union Jack waving leave Europe patriotic Churchill impersonator' ... ... just like Trump I don't find him the least bit patriotic. He's an absolute fraud who'll do nothing but undermine the only government we have. In the words of his colleagues, "Just shut up and go away."
