Had VAR existed in 1976 we can be fairly sure it would have sucked every last drop of joy out of the occasion.

    Another one re MLT:

He should get more stick than he does for his spot fixing attempt and his reputation would be much different had that kick v Wimbledon gone out of play.

Saints last (and only) major trophy was 47 years ago, it will be at least 47 years before they win another one, probably longer

True. But I always got the feeling this was just one those whimsical anecdotes he liked to tell.

If he'd really wanted to leave, I'm sure he would have.

He was before my time really so can’t comment too much, but I always got the impression that he didn’t think he would make it at a big club. Having a team built around him so he could be fat and lazy (by pro footballer standards) was not a luxury he would be given at a big club.

I have also wondered if he actually does regret not giving it a go and leaving. He’s never said that in interviews that I’ve seen, but privately he must have some regrets at least occasionally

He reckons that the reason he was snubbed by Glenda and El Tel for England was that on each occasion that they wanted to talk to him about the transfers on the phone (Chavs and Spuds) he refused to talk to them.

That’s the one where he was betting on the timing of the first throw in, right? Can’t believe he put that in his autobiography, what a lemon.

Still the most talented English player I have ever seen, ahead of both Hoddle and Gascoigne.

Yeah no idea wtf he was thinking putting it in his autobiography, but then as we've seen he's not the sharpest tool in the box.

He was good enough to walk into any team in the world imo (he wouldn’t have run so, that’s just as well).

He must have some regrets though, when people say “Show us your medals, Matt.”

The whole 'fat and lazy' thing is a bit of a myth, or at least its definitely over-exaggerated. I just don't think English football fans really got it back then. They just wanted to see sweat, blood and tears etc. Cantona didn't exactly bust a gut when he was playing, and yet he didn't get tarnished with the 'lazy' brush. Matt was like a Berbatov, Tadic type. Looked lazy, but that's only because his vision was so immense, he read the game several seconds before anyone else on the pitch. So he didn't need to run around.

EDIT: I agree with Archers. Someone that talented would have made it anywhere. He was as good as any other footballer in the Prem in the 90s.

Our home support is some of the worst in the league (no matter what league we're in)

+ one on that. Simply a footballing genius. Not only the most talented Englishman I have seen, but he is up there in talent with most of the 'greats' we mention. That isn't an exaggeration and anyone who watched him week in week out for us would probably agree with me.

The vision and some of the things he could do with the ball meant he made it look so easy that he looked lazy.

Why run to make a cross when he could hit any blade of grass with out looking up?
Why run to score a goal in the box when he could just smash it from the halfway line with an unstoppable shot?

You mean the JPT wasn't major? <laugh> Anyway we might've won the league cup if Gabbi's first goal had stood.

I'm not sure how you can say that unless you've been to a home game for every team in the country.

JWP is not captain material, great midfielder but we need someone who can shout orders.

We should keep tall Paul for another season and play to his strengths.

We should play in a sash more often!
